Uncle Jim bad then located his present home ranch, immediately north of Phciiis. The town was surveyed by Cant. W. A. Hancock, tud that the work was well done, every properly owner within the limits, will attest. It is laid out in true line ith the cardinal points of the compass; the streets being SO feet in width; (lie lots 50 fLct front by one hunded and thirty-soven aud a half feet iu depth. The al alleys - leys alleys running east and Wi-st are twenty-five feet in width. By this arrangement it will be seen that a block of twelve lots with its alley constitute a square of three hundred feet each way. The lots fronting on the plaza and the publie square, are twenty-five feet front by the depth already noted. SCSI BESS. Business was pretty lively in the early setil-ment of l'lienix, and many establishments were founded; the principal structures being for gambling, drinking, dancing and other nameless purposes. This prosperitv got away with the heads of many of the rancheros, and unnecessary luxuries iu the wav of fast living, were fully indulged in. THE STAMPEDE. The first era of prosperity was for two or three years when the reverse came. This was brought about by a want of home demand for the prolific crops so unfailingly produced by the extended fanning in this valley. Bailey, the chief staple product, fell to a ruinous price. There was no development of the mineral fields of the Terri Territory, - tory, Territory, employing an army of non non-producers - producers non-producers for their working that would consume the farm pre ducts. The ruinious reduction in price for farm products, crippled the merchants, stopped the employment of laborers, and caused a stamped from the country. Several of the small farmers became fugitives, leav leaving - ing leaving as the saying is, ' between two days " as they were unable to meet their creditors. The effect of this stampede is sli'l felt in the minds of some of those who remained here during these troublous times. These men arc afraid of too great a devel development - opment development of our agricultural resources, lest a repetition of the old calamity should occur. With the increase of interest, in capital and labor that is being invested in, and employed at the mines, such fears certainly arc groundless. The stampede made business very dull in l'henix. Many houses in the town were abandoned to the tarantula and scorpion. Hoofs, mould mouldered - ered mouldered and fell iu, and a general stag stagnation - nation stagnation and seeking after ' green fields and pastures new " was the order of the times.
