ernor R. C. jlcConmck, Avhose lion- ored name is a liouselioul word in Arizona. While Florence is, to a great extent, elevated to the dignity of a town through ils proximity to a nnm.bcr of wonderful mines, it is also surrounded by many hundreds of acres of excellent larming lands, all of which may be irrigated by waters from the Gila. Tle houses are all built ot adobe but present a better appearance than adobe houses generally do. The streets are laid out at right angles, and most of the thoroughfares arc shaded by trees that were planted or set out simultaneous with the com niencement of building. There is one good hotel, three or four boarding houses, and several stores. The United Stales Land Oilice for South Southern - ern Southern Arizona is located at Florence, and the place contains at least 500 in inhabitants. - habitants. inhabitants. THE JIIXlSC DISTKKTS ADJACENT TO FLORENCE. I rennik above that Florence is in the heart of a wonderful mining country. So it is so far as is at pres present - ent present developed ; and I doubt not that the discoveries yet to be made will astonish the coast. The famous Sil Silver - ver Silver King mine, owened in great part by Colonel James M. Barney, is near Florence. This mine is one of the wonders of Arizona. For many months the Silver King has produced all the way from 75,000 to nearly $100,000 a month with ten stamps. I sav while here 100,000 pounds of con concentrations - centrations concentrations that have since assayed r early 20,000. There is also a fine piece of property called the Redeem Redeemer - er Redeemer mine. There are two mills rimnrng night and day is this particular'loeul- it", and enough is on the dumps io keep the two mills with their fifteen stamps running for at least a ycar from the present time. There are on an average twenty men engaged in taking out ore from the Silver King, and enough is taken out to keep foity stamps iu constant operation.1 Just befoie arriving at the Silver King mine is a place called Picket Post, which may prove a formidable rival to Florence at no distant day. THE GLOBE DI STRICT. Further on over the mountains from Florenc e, King and Picket Post is an amazingly rich district called the Globe. Here quite a settlement has sprung up, and the people are as or- j in any mining or agricultural town in California. Among the most prom-; ! inent, mines in this locality are the Silver Nuggctt mine, the Imperial Stonewall Jackson, and many others of lesser note. Near the Globe dis district - trict district is mineral creek, showing a very Jarge number of good leads. A little way from Picket Post is another lich district, with any o.uantity of paying mines. There is one, called !he Union West, down nearly a hundred feet in. to rock at limes so rich that it cannot be crushed. There is a smali mill of five stamps in operation here. There are a number of mines in this locali locality - ty locality paying their way in milling ore while developments arc going on This is only a brief outline of min mining - ing mining and milling operations in a por portion - tion portion of Arizona near which the Southern Pacific Railroad will soon penetrate. It is not known by what means the pow powder - der powder became Ignited, but it is supposed that Castello was at the time taking out a quantity with which to charge a drill hole for the purpose of making a blast, when tho whole blast became ignited.
