8EXI-WEKLY EDITION. Wednesday. September 17. 1SJO. INEXHAUSTIBLE WEALTH. Arizona the Mineral Store Storehouse - house Storehouse of the Nation. An Unbiased Opinion of her Won Wonderful - derful Wonderful Resources. An Interesting Article full cf Facts. ' From the Boston Advertiser of a re cent date we condense the following interesting interview with Mr. Thom Thomas - as Thomas B. LeTis, of San Francisco, re garding Arizona as a mining country. From a thorough knowledge of the mining history of the Pacific Coast, and having been identified with the mining interests lor over thirty years, Mr. Lewis is especially qualified to exprees an intellgcnt opinion. Mr. Lewis thinks that the impres impression - sion impression among Californians is not gen generally - erally generally favorable in Arizona as a per. manent mining country. In the ab ab-scence - scence ab-scence of the hurrah and impulse which creates a rush, a new country must submit to a slow and cautious development, which in the end is deemed the most healthy and profita profitable. - ble. profitable. The causes of their lack of faith in her mines or the ultimate success of the country is due to the ephemeral superficial causes men usually set up, when they lack solid practical knowl knowledge - edge knowledge of what they presume to judge and condemn. Arizona like Oregon Idaho and Nevada, has h,ad to pas through a trying ordeal. Isolation Indians, and primitive pioneering followed by spaise settlements, sub jected to hardships, privations and poverty, compr'se tlie nrst cuajui in her history. Califor- nia was settled bv a rush. She had navisrable rivers leading to her mines and a seaport to which the commerce of the world had access; and sup plies o! every character we:e can ie there in such great excess over de demand - mand demand tnat the means and imple ments were at hand to enable the ea ger thousands to gather the treasures of the New El Dorado. Arizona na had no such good fortune. The poor fellows who crossed the Yuma des ert to search for gold and silver in what was supposed to be an aria waste. ODcn to the world a New El Dorado ; but the story of their suffer suffer-inss - inss suffer-inss will never be written. Some perished of thirst in the desert; some were murdered by savages; some sickened and died : some succeeded, and returned to civilization with nng gets of gold and silver. For years this sort of invading and retreating was kept up. The beginning or the end of trouble dawned upon Arizona when General Crook and his braye soldiers entered the Territory to es. tablish security and to turn the coun country - try country over to settlement and industry. The second event of importance is the observance of the self-preservation law by the Central Pacific Bail Bail-road - road Bail-road Company, in the rapid con construction - struction construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad. By that move Arizona is getting what, under ordinary circum circumstances, - stances, circumstances, she might not have had for decades to come, viz., a great rail railroad - road railroad running through the heart of the country, connecting her with both the East and the West, and from which line every pait of her territory will be reached and developed. The people of the Pacific States and Ter Territories - ritories Territories still clinging to the prejudices and unbeliefs of the past; but the Arizona, of to day is a new birth, and will grow rapidly to the importance and wealth of a great State. Who has come up from the depths to tell us all this bosh about there be being - ing being no depth, and consequently no rurmanenc.v. to her mines? Califor nians commenced mining by rocking the cradle; then came the sluice-box, followed bv the Georgia Long Tom ; then the mammoth flume, by which rivers were turned. All these ruae appliances were specially for surf-ice mining. Did the miners of those times dream that high up on the ridges of the Sierra Nevada anciert river beds were buried, and that down one, two, three hundred feet under the ground, under forrests of giant trees, the richest gold deposits in the known world glittered in the cement floors of the dead rivers? Do you suppose that the faintest idea of the power of the hydraulic, ns u.sed in

erlul will of William C. Italston grasped the situation, and procleimed a faith ia the extent and depth of the workings of nature's laboratory which put pumps and engines and mills ia motion again, and achieved resulta which claimed the world's attention. And those who had no faith at six h indred feet kept their ducats for the swindling manipulators of stocks after the city on the mountain hnd sunk down below the 2000-foot level. There were rich deposits on the sur face of the Comstock, but her most extensive bonanzas were found at great, depths. And so I believe it will prove with Arizona. We arc glad to odd the following additional testimony, showing thai Arizona's mining interests are daily growing brighter. George Tyng, the editor of the Yuma St'titind, a Boston gentleman, who has been in the mining territory since 1S57, and has lived in Arizon. since 186-3, and i now visiting the East, reports increas increasing - ing increasing activity all over the Territory. K. P. Saf Saf-ford, - ford, Saf-ford, to whose faith, energy, and en terprise Arizona is largely indebted for its present prominence, speaks of the inexhaustible wealth of the in numerable mines of the Territory' and Gen. John C. Fremont, present governor of Arizona, regards it as the chiet mineral storehouse of the nation." A Texas Cave Town. A correspondent of the Chicago 2"ri6!in,writing from Texas, says : We passed through a town some n:nety miles northwest of Fort Worth, called Oregon City, whose inhabitants live in caves, not particu larly because they are savages or know nothing of the comforts of civ civilized - ilized civilized life, but merely on occount of scarcity of lumber and the distance from market. Uncomfortable as this may sound, the inhabitants of these caves live most comfortably, the at mosphere is coo' ia the summer.; a .d they tell us that during the coldest weather of last winter they actualh- suffered from the heat iu what they call their adobe houses. These cave are not natural formations but are dug out'of a side-hill, are about the size of' a moderately large room, and a the bids farthercst from the entrance have a fireplace, and a fiuo running up to the surface of th-j ground, further up the hill than the entrance. Good ventilation is thus secured, and, wiih good drainage above, the cave is quite dry. Thu idea is a good one for frontier settlers who have not the wherewith to buy material for better habiti.tions. Thia little town was begun last fall by a colony from Oregon, and con!si s:!l it w-pntv tan-:!i-.-

I have resided on the Pac ific Coat nearly thirty years, and naturally take an interest in the progress and . development of the different States and Territories on the western slope of the r.ocky Mountains; have been a pioneer in many parts of California Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, Washington Territory and British Columbia; am familiar with gold and silver mining from the cradle to the quartz mill, and have seen so many theories dissi dissipated - pated dissipated b3' practical developments that I attach but little importance toopin ions. You have a great many wise men at the East at this time whn can tell you all about the hidden treasures of the earth, and the amount of money required to get at it, and the number of days in which you will be sure to find it. I have read a great deal about Arizona; have de deplored - plored deplored her troubles, and have rejoic rejoiced - ed rejoiced with the common public when they were conquered. Many of my personal friends comprise a part of her most intelligent, enterprising and reliable citizens, and from them I have a store of what I believe to b correct knowledge of many of her mining localities in their present state of development. I believe that her mines will prove permanent and remunerative. Na Nature - ture Nature is the foundation of my faith.
