How the name was read

Each atlas was set in type by a different hand and scanned decades later, so the same establishment comes back spelled differently. Every reading below was produced by the recogniser from the sheets; none was corrected or invented. They are published so a search for any of them finds this page.

Named in the 1889 county history

The history of Worcester County was published 9 years before the first of these atlases, and it names this establishment.

The oldest house in the village is a part of what is now the Central Hotel, kept by our popular landlord, Mr. J. N. Brooks. This house is said to have been built in the year 1759, by Mr. Jabez Brooks, and, for much the largest part of the time since, has been occupied as a tavern. At the time it was built there were but two houses within the distance of half a mile, - Deacon Jonathan O^'good's at the west and that of Mr. Roger Robbins at the east, where Mrs. C. A. Riley now lives. Another ancient dwelling is that on the north end of the Common, owned by Mrs. C. A. Goodnow. It is claimed by some that a part of this house was the first house built in the villege. It was, in very early times, owned and occupied by a Mr. Harris, grandfather of the late Mr. Clarendon Harris, of Worcester.

Provenance

Read by machine from the printed index of the Sanborn fire insurance atlases of Millville, Massachusetts, held by the Library of Congress. Sanborn atlases published before 1930 are in the public domain. Only names that at least three of four independent readings agreed on are published, and no spelling has been corrected: what appears here is what the recogniser returned from the ink.
