Named in the 1916 county history

The history of Erie County was published 6 years after the first of these atlases, and it names this establishment.

The settlers had to go to Cleveland for their mail until a route was established between Cleveland and Detroit, passing through Groton. John Paxton carried the mail in 1814. Afterwards Groton people depended on the Bloomingville postoffice. Groton postoffice was established in 1854, with Rev. Zar Patch, a local preacher of the Methodist Episcopal Church, as the first commissioned postmaster. The postoffice is now at the center of the township.
