Named in the 1890 county history

The history of Barnstable County was published 25 years before the first of these atlases, and it names this establishment.

Old deeds show that Samuel Higgins lived first in Harwich, from 1773 to 1798 in Eastham, and after 1798 in Orleans. Unless the place names are used carelessly, the probable explanation is that the variation is not due to removals, but to changes in town lines. The old line dividing Eastham from Harwich was at Portanimicutt River, so called, which is not a river, but a creek connecting Portanimicutt Salt Pond (now generally called Arey's Pond) with Pleasant Bay. This is due east from South Orleans post office and about two miles north of the present line between
