Named in the 1879 county history

The history of Columbiana County was published 22 years before the first of these atlases, and it names this establishment.

The Hon. John P. Elkin, who has just retired from the high office of the attorney generalship of Pennsylvania, spent his boyhood days in Wellsville, where his parents lived for a number of years. He worked in the rolling mill here and attended the public school, Supt. McDonald remembering him very well. He moved to the Keystone State, taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and, entering politics, was soon a power in that State. He was attorney general for four years, having filled the office with distinguished ability. He came within a few votes of being nominated Governor at the Republican State Convention in Harrisburg in 1902, after one of the most popular and brilliant campaigns ever conducted.
