July 2011Thunderstorm WindCalexico$500,000A strong thunderstorm with damaging microburst winds moved across the community of Calexico, south of Imperial, during the late afternoon on July 7th. Law enforcement and emergency management personnel reported that a number of trees were downed, and there was transformer damage as well. In addition, winds with gusts estimated to 70 knots damaged 30 homes, and 2 homes were destroyed by falling trees.
September 2017Thunderstorm WindCalexico$200,000Very strong thunderstorms developed across the higher terrain of northern Baja during the early afternoon hours, and then moved north into south-central Imperial County. Some of the storms generated gusty and damaging microburst winds estimated to be as high as 70 mph. According to a local emergency manager, at 1300PST gusty winds blew down 20 to 23 power poles along Carr Road, approximately 4 miles east of the town of Calexico and just north of the Mexican border. This caused the road to become closed from California Highway 7 to Barbara Worth Road.
July 2011Thunderstorm WindCalexico$50,000A thunderstorm with damaging microburst winds moved through the community of Calexico during the late afternoon on July 7th. As reported by law enforcement personnel, wind gusts estimated to be at least 60 knots toppled at least 6 power poles. The winds also knocked over several trees in central Calexico. In addition, heavy rain associated with the thunderstorm caused street flooding in town.
September 2013Thunderstorm WindCalexico$30,000Strong thunderstorms developed over the higher terrain of northwestern Mexico during the afternoon hours on September 7th, and they generated very strong and damaging outflow winds which spread north and into the community of Calexico. According to a trained weather spotter about 1 mile west of Calexico, gusty outflow winds estimated to be at least 75 mph in strength blew down numerous trees and cause some damage to roofs in the area. Street flooding was also reported. No injuries were reported as a result of the strong winds.
August 2012Thunderstorm WindCalexico$15,000Thunderstorms developed south of the Mexican border during the afternoon on August 13th. Due to the excessive heat and dry conditions, the storms were able to generate strong, gusty and damaging outflow winds. The strong winds spread to the north and into the southern portion of Imperial county, including the towns of Calexico and Heber. At 410 pm, a trained weather spotter in Calexico reported a number of trees downed, including some that were blocking a road. Additionally, at 405 pm an emergency manager in Heber reported trees downed by winds estimated to be 50 mph. The strong winds also created dust storm conditions, which lowered visibility to near zero in dense blowing dust. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries were reported due to the strong winds or dense blowing dust.

September 2017Flash FloodCalexico$5,000A line of thunderstorms developed across central Imperial County during the early afternoon hours and some of the stronger storms produced very heavy rainfall which impacted areas from the Imperial Valley south to the Mexican Border. Peak rain rates were in excess of 2 inches per hour and led to episodes of flash flooding. At 1339PST a local emergency manager reported significant flooding on California Highway 98 to the east of Calexico and west of Highway 7. A Flash Flood Warning was in effect at the time of the flooding; it was issued at 1316PST and remained in effect through 1600PST.
