Selected from the Digital Public Library of America's 5 image records catalogued for this county. Every one shown here carries a public-domain status or a licence that permits reuse on a site that carries advertising; non-commercial, share-alike and restricted images are excluded. The selection is spread across the county's towns (at most eight per town), so no single institution's bulk upload crowds out the rest. Each opens the holding library's record, and the complete set at the Digital Public Library of America is one click away.

The county from the air

Flown by the U.S. Geological Survey between 1937 and 1989, the Aerial Photo Single Frames collection is the definitive mid-century view of the land: fields, roads and rivers as the camera saw them. The Survey holds 12,990 frames inside the rectangle that bounds this county; the 48 frames below were taken over the county itself, chosen across the decades of flights (at most four a year from that rectangle), so one flight cannot crowd out the rest. The full set is free to browse and download at EarthExplorer under the dataset Aerial Photo Single Frames.

WhenEvent Place namedHarm What the report says
August 2021Flash FloodPalo Verde2 killed, $5,000Very heavy rainfall occurred along SR 78 in northeast Imperial County with amounts estimated to be approaching 7 inches in some places. This resulted in considerable flooding along the highway. The California Highway Patrol reported that a vehicle was swept off SR 78 at Milpitas Wash before overturning in the wash. Both occupants perished in the flash flood.
July 2012FloodDixieland5 hurt, $400,000Scattered thunderstorms developed across southwest Imperial county during the afternoon hours on July 30th. Due to the very humid and unstable nature of the atmosphere, the storms produced locally heavy rainfall with rain rates well in excess of one inch per hour. A Flash Flood Warning was issued at about 430 pm, which led to road closures west of El Centro, in the area near Seeley and Dixieland. Thunderstorms persisted into the evening, and additional rainfall led to areas of flooding along Interstate 8, Evan Hewes Highway and Highway 98. According to the California Highway Patrol, at approximately 9 pm flooding caused the closure of Interstate 8 in both directions between Drew Road and Dunaway Road. At 830 pm, local law enforcement reported the evacuation of 5 homes on Evan Hewes Highway due to a bank collapse along the Westside main canal. Heavy rain from earlier storms led to the collapse of the canal bank, and canal water then spread into the homes just west of Seeley. Overflow from the Westside canal eroded Evan Hewes Highway west of Westside road, and 100 feet of the highway were washed away. As a result, Evan Hewes Highway was closed from Dunaway to Westside road. In addition, Dunaway road was damaged beyond repair due to the flooding. Several minor injury traffic accidents were reported during the heavy rain and flooding, as rains limited visibility and made roads very slick. Finally, the breach of the canal resulted in no access to the Centinela State Prison. A large area of considerable runoff flowed through Niland and the surrounding area, as evident in reports and before and after Sentinel2 satellite images, with upwards of 6 inches to 1 foot of flowing water in some areas, per photos and videos. Major flash flooding impacts were experienced. The East Highline Canal east of Niland, was overcome with flood waters and silt, mainly north of of Flowing Wells Rd. The overflowing canal was first reported a little after 1600PDT and only exacerbated the flooding. Several roads became impassable, unsafe, and subsequently closed due to flood water. At least a few cars became stuck in flood water leading to swift water rescues by land and air. The exact number of rescues is unknown. In Niland, several photos and videos showed flooded streets and yards, with water coming up to homes and businesses. There were a few reports of water entering homes, but it is unknown how many homes were impacted. Also impacted in the area was agriculture, as several fields had flood water moving through them. Also the O Lateral canal, which branches from East Highline canal, suffered structural damage. The main highway through the area, Hwy-111, was flooded in several locations, which hampered relief efforts. The small town of Slab City, to the northeast of Niland, was cut off from the rest of the Imperial Valley due to the flooded roads. As a result of the significant impacts, the County of Imperial issued an emergency proclamation for additional and better resources. Red Cross assisted in relief and a couple shelters for evacuees were established. Every populated place in the county

78

Named settlements recorded in the Geographic Names Information System, each with the topographic sheets covering it. Villages, hamlets and abandoned places alike. Each is shown with the nearest named watercourse or landform and the survey quadrangle it falls on.

The vanished settlements of Imperial County: the places named above that are no longer on the map.
