A town of six thousand inhabitants, is beautifully located in the valley east of the Connecticut River and north of the Holyoke range of mountains. It is the seat of two noted educational institutions - Amherst College and Massachusetts Agricultural College. Originally part of the town of Hadley.

The Central Massachusetts division of the B. & M. R. R. and New London Northern division of the C. V. Ry. pass through the town. Connected by the electric railway with Northampton, Holyoke, Sunderland and Pelham.
