Entered railway service in 1879 with the Northern Pacific Railroad as levelman with a construction party on the Yellowstone Division, since which he has been con- secutively, from 1879 to 1880, engaged in the location of the Yellowstone and Missouri divisions of the same road; 1880 to 1883, engineer in charge of the construction of one hundred and sixty miles of those divisions; 1883 to 1888, chief engineer of the St. Paul & Northern Pacific Railway, in charge of the construction of the main line between Staples and F)rainerd, through Minneapolis to St. Paul, Minn., and of the construction of the terminals and shops in connection therewith; 1888 to July. 1893, chief engineer of the Northern Pacific Railroad and leased lines ; July, 1893, to February i, 1899, general manager for the receiv- ers for the same road and of the reorganized road, the Northern Pacific Railway; February i. 1899, to June 5, 1901, second vice-president, in charge of operation; June 5, 1901, to October 4, 1905, third vice-president of the Atchi- son, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, in charge of operation ; ( >ctober 4, 1905, to date, second vice-president, in charge of operation. Received his early education in the private schools of Baltimore and was sent to the technical schools of (icrmany and France to complete his studies. Returned to the United States in 1876 and entered Harvard Law School, from which he was graduated in 1879, at the age of twenty years. Fie practiced law in Chicago for three years, moving to New York in 1882, where he has since heen engaged in the practice of law. While in Chicago Mr. Morawetz wrote a treatise on the law of private corpora- tions, which was published in 1883. He first became asso- ciated with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway System in 1894, when he was made counsel for the reorgan- ization committee, becoming general counsel in 1896, which position he resigned in May, 1906. Fie was elected chair- man of the executive committee of the board of directors in njoo. Office, New York, N. Y.
