Situated on the New London Northern railroad, 4 miles from Pal- mer; II miles from Stafford Springs; 35 miles from Amherst; 17 miles from Spring- field; 99 miles from Boston; 61 miles from New London. Monson's industries date from 1800. Its mills manufacture the finest of goods and find a ready market for all

FLYNT PARK, overlooking the village and the country for miles beyond, is one of the finest located and beautiful parks in all New England, which is being constantly im- proved. It is visited from every section of the country, and the views from the tower are grand beyond description.

THE FLYNT QUARRIES, situated a mile distance from the village center, are among the most valuable in the United States. From 250 to 300 men are employed and the granite is shipped to every part of the country for monumental and building purposes, the output averaging 35,000 tons per annum. Among the fine buildings that have been built of Monson granite are the Horatio Lyon Memorial Library, the Memorial Town Hall, Monson; Boston & Albany railroad building, Agawam Bank, County Court House, Cooley's Hotel, Rude's Block, and many private residences in Springfield; City Hall, Holyoke; Universalist Church, Palmer; Boston & Albany railroad depots at Boston and Palmer; Walker Hall, Amherst College, Amherst; St. Francis Xavier Church, Sixteenth street, the new Isabella Home, One Hundred and Ninetieth street, New York City; Catholic Church, Norwich; South Park Avenue, M. The village of Wilbraham nestles under the first rise of hills on the eastern edge of the yalley of the Connecticut, about nine miles east from Springfield, on Boston & Albany Railroad. The villages are Wilbraham Center, North Wilbraham, Glendale and West Wilbraham. The Indian name applied to the original territory of the town was " Minechaug," meaning " berry land."" It is an entirely rural community, and the oc- cupation is almost exclusively agricultural. The main feature of interest is the Wes- leyan-Academy, a famous school which has flourished here for about sixty-six years, and is one of the best known and oldest schools in the country. No better spot could have been found for the location of a school. There is absolutely nothing to divert the attention of the students from their proper business and their legitimate sports. Even the two miles distance to the railroad station is an advantage.

The scenery of the region is picturesque in a very high degree. From the hills rising abruptly on the east, magnificent views are had of the wide sweep of the level valley with Mount Tom in the distance and the Holyoke range in the north; while just in the western horizon is seen the Berkshire hills, and in a clear day Greylock towering up in the northwest. Several cities and villages indicate themselves here and there in the wide landscape. The grounds of the Academy are extensive and of unusual beauty. There are many places of resort in the vicinity, some of them dear to the student's heart, as well as to that of the summer visitors who of late years have become quite numerous. Among them are " The Dell," "The Grotto," " Pulpit Rock," " Sunset Rock," "The Irish Pole," "Nine Mile Pond," etc. Population, State Census, 1885, 1,724; U. S.

The territory from which the town af Waren is made up was taken from Brook- field, Palmer and Brimfield, and comprises some 1,700 acres. At the time of its incor- poration, January, 1741, the town was known as Western, and in 1834, owing to the frequency of mail matter being miss sent to Western, Middlesex County, a new name was given to the growing town, and that of Warren was chosen, in honor of the patriot who fell at Bunker Hill, Warren is located midst the most striking and beautiful scenery in Worcester County, and lovers of nature and the summer visitors find much that is picturesque and grand in their rambles and drives, 'There are Warren and West Warren, each village enjoying a large and healthy trade. The merchants are, with few exceptions, a go-ahead set, which makes the town one of the most thriving in Central Massachusetts. An excellent public library, made possible by the liberality of Nathan Richardson and others, was established in 1876. The manufacture of Textile Fabrics is quite extensively carried on, as well as other industrial enterprises, and remunerative employment thus afforded to many people. Warren is a delightful town to live in, for its surroundings are pleasant and healthful. Situated 72 miles from Boston, 26 miles from Springfield, 11 miles from Palmer. Each of the Brookfields has some special advantages of its own, and it is but natural that the residents of cach of the thriving villages should think " there is no place like home," but a mutual inter-dependence exists between the communities. They all help one another, all believe in one another, with an abiding faith in the future of the entire section occupied by the Brookfields, which stimulates them in their industries and places them prominent among the leading towns of the Old Bay State. As nearly as can be estimated in the absence of accepted records, the first settlers came to Brookfield in 1660, and on the roth of October, 1665, purchased theland from an Indian who claimed to be the owner. That portion now known as West Brookfield was the scene, practically, of all the earliest events, while what is known as the town of Brookfield was the latest to be settled and improved. The north part of the town had been set aside as a parish in 1748, and regularly incorporated as the town of North Brookfield February, 28, 1812. Brookfield, incorporated November 12, 1718. Indian name Quaboag, Quabog or Quaboge. West Brookfield, incorporated March 3, 1848. East Brookfield and North Brookfield in January, 1876, were connected with the * North Brookfield Branch " of the Boston & Albany Railroad, and the event was a new era of prosperity. The Brookfields are noted for their manufacture of boots and shoes, textile fabrics, pottery, brick, condensed milk, condensed coffee, and many other industries which give employment to the industrious inhabitants. The population of all the Brookfields, in 1812, was 3,400. The State Census of 1885 gives Brookfield 3,013, North Brookfield 4,201, West Brookfield 1,747. U.S. Census, 1890, gives Brookfield
