Astronomers teacli that our earth is but a small star. This is becoming almost evident to our senses. have brought distant places within easy reach, and enable us to send the expression of our thoughts with such speed, that even Puck's 40 minutes is no longer "good time." As a result it is quite impossi- ble for us to imagine the distance that intervened between Europe and the "New World" at the time when histor}^ first mentions them together, or the great resolution necessary for a voyage here. The early emigrants to all parts of these shores were con- fronted by similar obstacles. There were the wild forest-clad lands, the unaccustomed and severe cli- mate, and the savage inhabitants in whom war Avas an instinct.

Why should it surprise us, that, after the wonder- ful A'Ovage of Columbus in 1492, it required three generations for men to become enough familiar Avith these obstacles to undertake a settlement in the "western Avilds?" There Avere many voyages for dis- covery by the A^enturous navigators of those early times, many of Avhich are almost legendary from the lack of records. John Cabot, and his son Sebastian? visited the coast of North xlmerica as early as 1497 and took possession in the name of his sovereign? Henry the Seventh of England. They reached, not the expected sunny Indies, but the bleak, mist- shaded shores of NeAvfoundland and Labrador. The next year Sebastian made a second voyage and sailed along the coast from Labrador to Florida. The Cabots haA^e the honor of first discovering the mainland of North America. In 1524 Yerrazani

sailed along tlie coast, named tlie country New France, and claimed it for the King of France. Thus began a rivalry that lasted through many generations of bloody strife. The English, French, Spanish and Portuguese fishermen who for many years, with some regularity, had spent the summers here? helped to make the possibilities of this Continent more apparent to the people of Europe. The French were first to plant a Colony. They settled at Port formed a settlement at Jamestown, Ya., 1607. The Dutch settled at New A^ork, in 1614 ; claiming the right because of discoveries by their countryman, Henry Hudson, whose name will ever be whispered by the waters of the"Noble Hudson" river and asso- ciated with the wild, frost-whitened billows of Hud- son Bay which remains his grave. It was in this year that a chart of these shores was made by Capt. John Smith who reported most favorably, as had the French Commander, Champlain, in 1605. Smith returned to England with this chart, which was sub- mitted to Prince Charles (afterwards Charles I) who afiixed names to many places. Of these Plymouth, Charles Kiver (named after himself) and Cape Ann (after Ann of Denmark, his mother), still adhere to those localities as memorials of that unfortunate king

The Pilgrims landed and settled at Plymouth late mained in spite o^ the most severe increased and planted many towns. In August pany settled at Wessagusset (No. Weymouth). This The Mayflo^r. was the beginning

of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay. Other large and well appointed settlements rapidly followed, and May 14th, 1690, this newer but more prosperous colony absorbed that of Plymouth; Sir William Phips, a native of Woolwich, Me., having arrived at this date bringing a charter to that effect.

Hingham, including what is now Cohasset, was first called " Bear Cove." It was settled in 1633 by emigrants who came mostly from Hingham^ County of Norfork, England. Among those to whom lands were granted in 1633 were, William Hersey, Thomas Loring, Henry Rust, Henry Tuttle, William Walton, Richard Osburn and John Fearing. The town was incorporated Sept. 2d, 1635, soon after the arrival of the Rev. Peter Hobart, " with part of a church and congregation to which he had been pastor in "Old Hingham." After obtaining deeds from the natives they held their first town meeting Sept. 18th, of that year. "This Colony preserved, generally, a good standing with the Indians."

The style of living in all the towns at this time was of necessity very simple. There ivere but few poorly constructed roads. Travel was mostly on foot or by water. Trade was almost wholly confined to barter, and October 7th, 1640, the General Court made farm produce, cattle, fish, etc., legal tender, for all debts, legacies, fines, etc., at prices fixed by itself. The people lived in the planest manner on the products of their own lands and of the sea. The houses were built mostly of logs and thatched with, shore grass, which was carefully guarded for the

Early Colonial Costumes.

The natural beauties and wide salt meadows (Co- niliasset marshes,) of this part of Hingham, soon were Tower, Cushing, Lincoln, Beal, James and Sutton, while those of Bates, Nichols, Pratt, Kent, Orcutt and Stoddard were soon added. The points first occupied were Bocky Nook, Jerusalem, Mill Street, extending to the harbor, the Plain and Beech- wood, and probably in the order named.

Until 1714 Cohasset remained a part of the religi- ous Society of Hingham. Thither, although the roads were very poor, these men and women repaired each Lord's Bay ; and here buried their dead. In this year they petitioned to be made a separate parish, and were twice refused by the town. The next year the General Court decided in their favor- Bev. Nehemiah Hobart came as their minister, July 13, 1721. Their first meeting house was of necessity small and plain in all its appointments, although the most of the settlers were men of some means. It is said that a log house was never built in Cohasset.

Vessels Avere built here at an early date, and pro- fitably used in tlie fisheries and commerce. An early writer says, "Having roads barely passable, and leading throngli tlieir OAvn to no place but the bay, they Avere little connected Avith older societies. Their marriages were generally among themselves, so that a large portion of the members became con- nected by blood, and continues so, in an uncommon degree, to the present day." He continues ; "Having the bountiful cow and the bees, tamed from the forest, their dAvellings floAved with milk and honey 5 and they could, Avith the 'broiled fish and a little honey-comb,' with other materials Avhich the house afforded, furnish a social repast, far more friendly to health, virtue 'and cheerfulness, than can he found in the luxuries ivhich load the fashionahle hoards of modern conviviality f (the italics are ours). Living so near the sea they Avere tempted to plough its billows for bread instead of their rugged soil. Both in the French and Be volution ary Avars a great proportion of her young men bore arms.

The line betAveen Hingham and Scituate - the line betAveen the Colony of Massachusetts Bay and the Plymouth Colony - Avas A^ery indefinite at the first. This led to much trouble; many men from the Massachusetts Colony having to pay damages for trespass. One of these EdAvard Gillman paid X26.10.6. "Gillman Plain" receded its name from his trespass.

1636. Scituate claimed that "Conihasset Gulph" was the natural boundar}^ Hingham pleaded that the marshes Avere a natural accommodation to the highlands on both sides. In 1637 a commission Avas appointed to settle the line, but came to no agreement. Again in 1640 William Bradford, Governor, and EdAvard WinsloAV, Gent, on the part of Plymouth; and John Endicott, GoA^ernor, and

Israel Stougliton, Gent, on the part of Massaclmsetts, were appointed a commission to settle this line, and agreed that the line should be "from the mouth of the brooke that runneth into Conihasset marshes in a straight line to the middle of Accord Pond." It was also agreed that 60 acres of marsh on the Scituate side should belong to Hingham. But this only added to the embarrassment as it was found that the same lands had been granted by either government and the grantees would not yield. Again in 1656 William Torrey and Capt. Bracket for Mass., and Josiah Winslow and another for Plymouth, agreed that "The Gulph shall stand as boundary. This was again confirmed in 1664. This seems to have satisfied the colonial rulers, but the adjoining towns of Hingham and Scituate were not satisfied while conflicting individual claims remained.

1685. The town of Scituate voted "To block up the highway leading from Scituate common lands to Hingham." 1721 the selectmen of Scituate were in- structed to settle this elusive boundary.

1675, June 24. The bloody King Phillip's war was begun by an attack on Swansea, and for two years added greatly to the burdens of these times. The Indians made an early attack on Hingham.

1685, December. Sir Edmund Andros arrived as governor. He sought to centralize the government of the colonies. This interfered with the freedom in local matters enjoyed by the several towns. A storm of excitement and opposition was raised> which ended only with the deposition of Governor Andros and the restoration of the old order of things-

and established as The District of Cohasset. This name is from the Indian word Connohasset (a fishing promontory.) August 23, 1775, the district of Cohasset was made a Town by general act. For several years preceding and until 1783, local affairs

were colored or wholly obscured by the stirring events of the Eevolutionary War. The ill effects of the war were apparent and the business depression severe and lasting.

The war of 1812 interfered greatly with the busi- ness of this, then, commercial community, and the War of the Eebellion brought to the people here their full share of grief and tears and glory ; but through it all Cohasset has shared very fully in the wonderful prosperity of the country, until it, and the Nation of which it forms a part, have outgroAvn the wildest dream of their founders.

1821. " There are 41 vessels owned in Cohasset

Of these part are employed in the mackeral fishery, others in the cod-fishery, while larger vessels are engaged in foreign trade."

The underlying rock is sienite. Ledges of this rock add variety to the landscape and form many picturesque and danger- shore. A lighthouse built in 1848 was carried away in the unusual storm of keepers were lost. Another, finished in 1860, is famous the world over as Minot's Light. The Cohasset Water Company was formed and incorporated in 1886. The success of the under- taking being due principally to Mr. C. S. Bates, a liberal and public spirited Summer resident, with a

view to aiding tlie town in securing the great benefit of protection from fire, and a supply of pure drinking water. The supply is obtained from a system of driven wells, sixty-two in number, located in the centre of the town. Pumped to a reservoir of millions gallons capacity, at an elevation of 160 feet above high water, giving an average pressure of 60 lbs. in the street mains. The quality of the water is above the average, for purity and freedom from vegetable and animal growth, such as is com- mon in pond and river supplies. The accomplish- ment has added to the many other attractions of the town, and to the comfort of the numerous Summer residents, who have built upon our rocky shores and sandy beaches, where it is impossible to obtain water, except what is supplied from the clouds.

1894. Cohasset is an extremely attractive sea- board town, agreeably diversified by hills, rolling uplands and sea-meadows. Its broken and varied caost line of rock and sandy beaches on Massa- chusetts Bay, affords views to satisfy every one, and attract Summer residents of the most exacting tastes. Large numbers of the most cultured have chosen to make their Summer homes here.

The town is brought into close relation with Bos- ton, twenty miles distant, by the frequent and well- appointed trains of the South Shore Branch of the Old Colony Division of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Eailway. FRUIT AND VEGETABLES, in their season

Elm Street, - Near Summer, Cohasset, Mass.

It is not definitely known in what year the fiirst meet- ing house was built in that part of the town of Hingham which is now Cohasset, but it was, undoubtedly, between the years 1713 and 1720. It was situated between the present Old Church and the pond, on the Town's Common, or Plain (so called), and, though small and plain, for nearly thirty years the few, scattering. God-fearing people assembled weekly within its rough walls to pray, and sing psalms together, and listen to the good Parson Hobart's long sermons. Rev. Nehemiah Hobart, the first minister, was grandson of Rev. Peter Hobart, the first minister in Hingham, and was ordained December 13, 1721. He continued with the Society until his death,

Rev. John Fowle succeeded Rev. Nehemiah Hobart, and was ordained December 31, 1741. Rev. Mr. Fowle ministered to this church and society about five years when he was dismissed.

The work of building the present meeting-house of the old parish was commenced about the time of Mr. Fowle' s

Rev. John Brown was the next minister, and the first one to preach in the new church as a settled pastor. He was ordained September 2, 1747, and continued with the society until his death, which occurred after a pastorate of nearly forty- five years, in the sixty-seventh year of his age.

Rev. Josiah G. Shaw succeeded Rev. Mr. Brown, and was ordained October 3, 1792. His connection with the Parish- as its pastor was the shortest of any in line, being less than four years.

Rev. Jacob Flint succeeded Rev. Mr. Shaw, and was ordained January 10, 1798. Mr. Flint continued with this parish until his death, which occurred after a minis- try of about thirty-seven years.

Rev. H. G. O. Phipps, the next minister, was ordained ministry of about six years.

Rev. Joseph Osgood, D. D., the present minister, was ordained October 2fi, 1842, and now, after a continuous and almost unprecedented settlement as pastor over a single church, of more than fifty-one years, he still retains in a remarkable degree, health, vigor and brains, which it is hoped will abide with him for a good time to come.

An early historian says, "Scituate, like most of the towns in Plymouth Colony, had been nearly de- populated of natives by small-pox a few years before the English made a permanent settlement on this coast." Other early writers name the disease that wrought such havoc among the Indians here as "ma- lignant yellow fever," while others, more careful, say, "by some pestilence." Whatever the disease, it must have appeared to those unenlightened minds as the darkest frown of the Great Spirit. The result was appaling. Morton of Ma-re-Mount, 1625, in his New England Caanan says that everywhere through the forests were groups of unburied human remains - "a second Golgotha."

Scituate was the home and hunting grounds of the Matakee- setts who were under the supreme control of the Chief or Sachem of the Massachusetts.

Many of the Aboriginal names are still used as, Conihasset, Satuit, etc. The name of the Town is the Indian name of the brook that flows into the harbor. It was called by the natives Satuit (cold brook) and the name of the Town in the earliest records, 1633, was Satuit. Shortly after, it was writ- ten Seteat, then Cittewat and

about 1640 the present form of spelling was adopted.

By deed dated June 1653, and signed by Josias Wampatuck, Chief of the Matakeesetts, the Indians conveyed to Timothy Hatherly, James Cudworth, Joseph Tilden, Humphrey Turner, William Hatch, John Hoar and James Torrey, "for tbe proper use and behoof of the inhabitants thereof," their a deed had been given which was subsequently

The earliest notice of a settlement at Scituate was in 1628, by William Gill- son, Anthony Annable, Thomas Bird,

Nathaniel Tilden, Edward Foster and Henry Bowley. These were from Kent County, England, and were known as

1633. The principal street was called Kent Street. It led from the bridge as it now lies to Third Cliff. The first lot, corner Kent Street and what is now Central Street, was assigned to Edward Foster. This site is now occupied by the residence of Geo.

1637. The Colony Court decreed, "It is enacted that the Colony of New Plymouth shall send forth ayd to assist them of Massachusetts Bay and Con- necticut in their wars against the Pequin Indians, in reveng of the innocent blood of the English which the sd Pequins have shed and refuse to give satis- faction for." This war led to the union of the Mas- sachusetts, Plymouth, Connecticut and New Haven colonies for mutual defence.

In 1638, William Vassall and William Hatch were appointed by the Colony Court "to exercise the peo- ple in arms at Scituate."

1643. There were over one hundred men, over .sixteen and under sixty.

1658. A troop of horse was ordered by the Court to be raised. Four men were required of Scituate. Robert Stetson was appointed Cornet of that troop. There was peace between the colonists and Indians until King Phillip's War in 1675. On the breaking out of this war Major James Cudworth, who had been distrusted because of his opposition to the severe laws against the Quakers, was unanimously chosen General and Commander-in-Chief of all the forces that should be sent against the enemy. He was then over seventy years of age and retained this position until the end of the war.

These were trying times. By the Colony Court it was decreed: "It is ordered that every man that comes to meeting on the Lord's Bay bring with him his arms, with at least six charges of powder and shot," also "that whoever shall shoot off a gun at any game whatsoever, except at an Indian or a wolf, shall forfet 5s. for such default, until further order."

In the Spring of 1676 Captain Michiel Pierce with fifty men and twenty friendly Indians were slain almost to a man by a large force of Indians under Canonchett, chief of the Narragansetts.

This chief was taken prisoner a few days after. Robert Staunton, a young soldier, asked some ques- tions of the sachem who proudly answered, "you too much child ; no understand matters of war ; let your captain come ; him I will answer." When informed that he was condemned to death, he re- plied : " I like it well. I shall die before my heart is soft ; before I have spoken anything unworthy of

Then followed the French and Indian wars which were intermittent from 1687 to 1759 and largely par- ticipated in by the town.

In 1774 a Committee was chosen to confer with those of other parts of the country and soon was begun the Revolution ; - a war in which were many elements of brother against brother.

Jan. 8, 1775, the Committee of inspection report- ed : - "We, by request of the town, waited on Charles Curtis and Frederick Henderson, shop- keepers to know if they intended to adhere to the Continental Association. The first answered T shall not adhere to it,' and the latter added ' I don't know any Congress' "

The first settlers early turned their attention to ship building, commerce and the fisheries. Ship building was begun at the Harbor by William James This industry was carried on more extensively along the North River where many of the far-famed whale ships of Nantucket and New Bedford were built. Early in this century the increasing obstruc- tions at the mouth of the river and the diminished timber supply caused its discontinuance. Many of the best shipwrights and naval architects of the country were trained here.

Manufacturing enterprises were never given much attention, owing to the lack of water power and the readier income to be obtained from the sea. " In 1648, Mr. Timothy Hatherly, the principal founder and father of the Town of Scituate, re- quested liberty of the Colony to erect an iron mill. It was granted in 1650, on conditions that it be erected within three years, or the privilege and cer- tain woodlands about Mattakeeset Pond (now Pem- broke) were to revert to the Colony. It was not built however at that period but a smelting furnace was erected on the precise grant, by Mark Despard and the family of Barker about 1702."

Torrey, in his history of Scituate, says, "Scituate, indebted to the substantial character of some of its founders, many of whom, it is evident, came chiefly from Kent County, in England, soon became a respectable town, early taking the lead in rates and levies of men, which superiority it maintained to the last annals of the Colony. Are you a Kentish man or a man of Kent? has its historical value as respects origin." It may be added here that in the prompt response to all later calls for patriotic sac- rifice; in the heroism displayed by those who man the boats of the U. S. Life Saving Stations and per- form all duties devolving upon "those who go down to the sea in ships," as well as in the substantial share of wealth and fame won by those of her citi- zens who have sought a wider field of action, is ample proof that the descendants of these "Men of Kent," and of their fellows have not borne them- selves in a degenerate manner.

Many of her children who have struggled and triumphed in distant parts return to build their beautiful summer and permanent homes along her lovely shores and on her health-giving hills. Ever through the harsher notes of life's necessary work

. It seems improbable that slaves were owned by these worthy men but such Avas the fact. Indian servants were often mentioned in the wills of the first generation and later negro slaves Avere common. Descriptions of runaAvay negroes Avith offers of suit- able reAvards appeared in the papers of the Eigh- teenth Century much as "Dog Lost" is seen in the dailies of today.

Scituate has lost much of its original territory. In 1727 a part of the toAvn on the southerly side of the third herring brook was incoporated and named Hanover, In 1849 another part was incoporated as South Scituate, since re-named Norwell. It now extends about eight miles on the shore of Massa- the beach on the East and the glades on the West. Nearly in the centre of this line is Scituate Harbor formed by CroAv Point on the South-east and Cedar Point on the North-west. On the latter a lighthouse was built in 1811. This is not noAv kept. The National Government is building breakAvaters from each point and by dredging hope to make a harbor of refuge which is much needed on this coast. There is a United States Life Saving Station at North Scitu- ate Beach and another at Fourth Cliff, while the Massachusetts Humane Society has provided a building with life-boats and other apparatus at The Glades, near Minot's Light, at North Scituate Beach, at the Sand Hills, and at Scituate Harbor. The last are

Beside the fishing and other occupations incident to seaport towns there is done here a large business in gathering and prepar- ing sea moss for market. It will be interesting for comparison to know that in 1865 there was secured from the sea, mackerel, value $600.

1894. Scituate is a thorughly representative town of this most interesting South Shore section. It is well supplied with good churches and schools and has an intelligent and order-loving people. It offers many advantages to persons seeking permanent homes while to those birds of passage the "Summer Besident" and "Tourist" is presented a great variety of attractions in her wooded hills,lovely river, harbor and ocean views.

The merchants in every department of trade are enterprising and progressive. They show unusually large stocks and quote prices that compare most favorably with those of the large business centers. (See index to advertisers.)

The stranger sees in the many public and private buildings in process of erection signs of a steady and healthy growth which we trust will ever belong to the pleasant town of Scituate. J. H. H.

National Monument, Plymouth, Mass.

The National Monument to the Forefathers, at Plymouth, Mass., built by the Pilgrim Society at a dedicated Aug. 1st, 1889. The structure which is of granite was designed by Hammatt Billings of Bos- ton. Total height 81 feet. Base 45 feet. Statue elbow to tip of finger, 9 feet 9 inches ; length of inches around ; below elbow 6 feet 2 inches ; wrist 4 feet around ; length of finger pointing upward 2 ft. around ; circumference of neck, 9 feet, 2in. ; length star 1 foot across. The figure is 216 times life size, - the largest piece of granite staturay in the world.
