The most serious of them, by death, then
injury, then recorded damage. The accounts are quoted exactly as the
forecast office filed them.
Numerous trees, limbs, wires, and utility poles were downed across Hingham, including one that hit a person, injuring the person. Also, a tent blowing around hit a person, resulting in minor injury. An amateur radio operator recorded a wind gust of 68 mph on their home weather station near Hingham Harbor.
A 67 year old man was indirectly struck by lightning at Cape Cod Shipbuilding on Narrows Road. The lightning traveled through the ground to the man. He was conscious and alert when taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
A woman in her 30s was taken to the hospital after she was reportedly struck by lightning. Emergency officials indicated the woman did not appear to be seriously injured, and suspected the lightning struck in the immediate vicinity but did not directly strike the woman.
A man in his 30s was struck by lightning while holding a personal electronic device at an auto repair shop. Lightning struck the ground nearby and jumped to the electronic device. Injuries were reported as not life threatening.
There were two lightning strikes at Camp Cachalot, a boy scout camp run by the Narragansett Council. One of them struck near the dining hall where one of the|Scouts was leaning on a metal serving table. He received a slight shock and, as a cautionary measure, the rescue squad was contacted. One of the troop leaders accompanied the boy to the hospital where they were met by the parents - he was checked out, found to be OK, and released.
A woman was injured while turning off the water to an outdoor shower when lightning struck somewhere inside the house and travelled through the plumbing.
Several small streams went into flood, including the Taunton River at Bridgewater, the Jones River at Kingston, and the Indian Head River at Hanover. Several streets were closed throughout East Bridgewater, Bridgewater, and Whitman. In addition, collections at the Holmes Public Library in Halifax were damaged by floodwaters. Residents of John Dunn Drive in Rockland were evacuated from their homes. Forty homes in Brockton were evacuated after power and gas were shut off to the houses. Several roads were closed in Brockton due to flooding.
Three to eight inches of rain fell across Plymouth County resulting in several small streams rising above flood stage, including the Taunton River at Bridgewater which set a record, the Indian Head River at Hanover, and the Jones River at Kingston.||Several ponds in Lakeville rose out of their banks. At least 35 families were evacuated because of the pond flooding. Schools in Lakeville closed early Tuesday, March 30 and closed for the day Wednesday, March 31 because of the flooding. Two buildings in the Ashley Place condominium complex in Middleborough were evacuated due to flooding. A day care center on Route 28 was also evacuated. A handful of people were evacuated from a multi-family dwelling on Ames Street in Brockton.||Many streets flooded (and most were eventually closed) in Wareham, Mattapoisett, Scituate, Bridgewater, Brockton, East Bridgewater, Middleborough, Kingston, and Lakeville, including Route 105 in Middleborough where it passes under Interstate 495 at exit 4. This intersection was eventually closed. Portions of Route 44 in Middleborough were closed due to flooding. Route 18 in Whitman was closed between Routes 27 and 14. A few basements flooded in Marion and some in Norwell were flooded with several feet of water. West Bridgewater High Schol was closed early Tuesday, March 30 due to flooding that threatened the electrical system at the school.||Several sewage treatment plants flooded resulting in raw sewage being discharged into rivers and other bodies of water.
Lightning struck a tree 30 feet away from a house on Jason's Lane. The lightning traveled through the root system to the house, setting it on fire. The house was deemed a total loss.
A house on Monponsett Street was struck by lightning, causing a fire in the attic. This fire was contained, but caused extensive damage. A second house on Ocean Avenue was struck by lightning, resulting in a fire that fully engulfed the house in flames. This house was a total loss.
A microburst occurred in Wareham with a thunderstorm associated with a band from superstorm Sandy. A swath of 60 to 70 mph wind gusts occurred with pockets of 80 to 90 mph gusts. The hardest hit locations in Wareham were Swifts Beach, Pinehurst, and Onset Bay Marina. The survey team determined that a damage area of 2 miles in length and 2 miles in width in this area. Based on radar signatures and eyewitness accounts, thunderstorm wind damage began in Falmouth around 6:25PM, then became more intense over Wareham around 6:40PM. The survey team determined that approximately 100 trees were significantly damaged or knocked down in Wareham, with many bringing down wires. The initial downdraft occurred in Swifts Beach then headed north-northeast over Pinehurst toward Narrows Road. In the Swifts Beach area there were numerous downed trees with one tree impaling the roof of a house on Sherman Street. Other points of interest were located on Pilgram Avenue, Judson Street, Pine Street, and Swifts Beach Road. Trees were also downed near the fire department on Main Street in downtown Wareham. Trees were also downed on Church Avenue at t he Redwood Park Elderly Complex. In the Pinehurst area of Wareham, downed trees were evident on Franconia Avenue and Pinehurst Drive. On Narrows Road, a couple of trees were knocked down across the road. In the Onset Bay Marina area, boats that were stored on a 3 story tier were tilted in their racks. A sailboat in the marina was tilted 90 degrees with the mast parallel with the water for about 2 minutes before righting itself. Additionally, 2 boats of unknown size were reportedly sunk in the downdraft. In the Nanumett Heights section of Point Independence (in Onset), significant tree damage was confirmed on Prospect and Webster Streets. The survey team and eyewitness accounts observed much of the tree damage to be oriented in a south to north direction, confirming a microburst.
In Middleborough, a microburst with winds estimated around 75 mph knocked down multiple trees on a KOA Campground, several of which fell onto cabins, RV campers, and cars. Amazingly, there were no injuries. Just south of the campground, a tree was down on a house on Plymouth Street, with its branches piercing the roof. A large tree was down on wires on Wareham Street at Margery Street. A large tree was down on Harding Street.
Heavy rain caused a road washout in the Pinehills section of Plymouth on Long Ridge Road near the intersection with Sacrifice Rock Road. Rainfall totals of 5.69 inches were reported by a ham radio spotter in Plymouth. The Plymouth Airport recorded 5.32 inches of rain in just six hours. Basement flooding was reported up to the furnace on Sandwich Street in Plymouth. A portion of Route 3A (State Road) was closed due to flooding. According to the Boston Globe, in Plymouth Harbor, an unoccupied boat sank in its mooring due to the weight of the water and several other vessels had to be pumped out. No injuries were reported.
Numerous trees and wires were downed by thunderstorm winds throughout Brockton. This includes trees and wires on Warren Avenue in front of the Boys and Girls Club, near the high school, on Route 14, on French and Perkins Avenues, and on Ash Street. One of these trees fell on a dentists office on South Street in the Campello neighborhood.
An Onset mobile home park was flooded with two and a half feet of water. One mobile home was moved off its foundation by these flood waters. Also, East Boulevard in the Onset section of Wareham was closed due to flooding.
A large tree limb on Sandwich Road was downed onto a car by thunderstorm winds. The car was for sale at a used car dealership. Trees were downed into houses on Agawam Drive and Perry Avenue.
Several streets were flooded and impassable including North Main Street near Lansdown Street and Warren Avenue. Tremont Street was flooded with more than a foot of water. A car drove into two feet of water on Ettrick Street and became stuck. Two people had to be rescued from the car. Westgate Drive was flooded with three feet of water, with several cars stuck in the flood waters.
Multiple trees were downed on the School Street extension. A tree was downed onto a building on North Street. Multiple large trees were downed on Precinct and Thompson Streets.
In Wareham, a car was stuck in flood waters on the Cranberry Highway. A portion of Long Pond Road in Plymouth was flooded with over one foot of water near Gunners Exchange Road.
Several large trees and branches were blown down on the south side of Fearing Pond in Myles Standish State Forest. Eyewitnesses reported waves up to two and a half feet tall formed on the small pond. The strong winds from the northwest hit a steep embankment and a thick stand of pine trees 35 to 50 feet tall. This resulted in a couple of small kayaks on the beach on the southeast corner of the pond being lifted up and blown ten to fifteen feet. Numerous tents on the southside of the pond also were blown about 20 to 30 feet. Numerous trees were blown down in the area of New Grassy Pond, a kettle pond that sits at the base of a bowl in the terrain. Most of the damage occurred on the south side of the pond, though there were a couple of trees blown down on the north side of the pond. The trees on the north side of the pond were downed from the winds circling around the edge of the bowl that the pond is sitting in. This also resulted in the water in the pond being pushed out approximately two feet beyond the normal water line around the majority of the pond. The only other damage consisted of some shingles being blown off a small cottage on the south side of Fearing Pond and a camping trailer on the southeast side of the pond that had two holes punctured in the roof from falling tree limbs.
