IIjSaLLAUGH is a parish in the sheading of Michael, in the northern division of the island ; in length, from north to south, about five miles, and in breadth, fiom east to west, about three. The northem part is level and fertile - the southern mountainous and compara- tively baireu. Ballaugh is a long straggling village in the above parish, situate on the road from Ramsey to the towns of Peel, Douglas, &c.; nearly seven miles west of Ram- sey, nine north-east of Peel, and eighteen n<uth of DouBlas. C/ASTLETOWN is a well-built respectable market town in the paiish of Malew, and is the capital of the island, being the seat of the insular government ; it is There is little in the way of manufacturing here ; but from the frequent sittings of different courts of law, and the number of pupils educated at the college, the tovvn generally presents an animated appearance. Con- siderable quantities of agricultural produce are brought to the market-place, which forms a tine area, almost square, ornanienied in the centre with a chaste fluted freestone column, nenrly fifty feet high, in the Grecian style, erected in 18.36 to the memory of the late vene- rable Lieutenant-Governor C. Smelt ; the column will shortly be surmounted by a colossal statue. The tovvn consists of several good streets, all clean and in good repair. Over the small river which forms the port is a stone bridge for carriages, and below that is a wooden draw-bridge for foot passengers. The liay is spacious, but rocky 4 and the harbour is still only capable of ad- mitting small vessels, though in this year (1837) it has about four feet ; the pier is terminated by a liahthouse. In the centre of the town stands Castle Rushen, a most noble spicimeu of Gothic architeciuie, which, according to tradition, was built by Guitn-d in 960; the workmen who were making some alterations in the castle in 1815, however, found a In am bearing the date of '947;' it is, therefore, naturally conjectured that the castle was erected in that year. The walls are from .seven to twelve feet thick, from seventy to eighty feet high, and the limestone of which they are com- posed is as fresh as though it had been taken from the quarry (Mily a few years since. Those of the chancery and exchequer are held on the fir.-tTbur.sday of every month except January and Sep- tember, but if necessary special courts are called; a court of comn)on law sits in February, Mav, July and Ol tuber ; a couit of genend gaol delivery takes place twice a year, and ofteiier should the lieutenant-gover- nor deem it requisite; the deems'er's court sits every alternate Monday, the water bailiff's and high i)ailiff's courts every Saturday, the insular debtors' court in the months of Ft bruaiy and August, the house of keys' i ennit once a year, and aTvnwald couit the 5th July. The places of worship are the parish church, one mile and a quarter north of Castletown - the living in the uift of the ciown; St. Thomas's chapel, forming part of King William's College ; and St. Mary's chapel, on one side of the paiade ; the lat'er, which was first in the gift of the governor. 'J'he Wesleyan and primi- tive methodists, and independents, have each a chapel j and there is also one for Roman catholics, on College- green, in which service has not yet been performed.. Half a mile north-east of the town, and about three hundred yards from the shore, stands King William's College, one of the finest public buildings in the Isle, erected in 1830 in the early English style; it is two hundred and ten feet long and one hundred and thirty- five f( et broad, including St. Thomas's chapel, which stretches from the centre at right angles with the col- lege; from the intersection rises a square embattledl tower, ninety-seven feet high. The buildings cost up- wards of £6,500.; the accumulated funds left for edu- cational and other purposes in the hands of trustees, voluntary subscriptions, or still remains to be paid. Moie than one hundred and fifty pupils, chiefly board.-T er.«, are educated in the college at present, and are prepared for the British and Irish universities, and for the piofessions; two students are educated on the foundation for the Manx church. The college contains four spacious class-rooms, and a library is attached to the institution. There is an excellent grammar-school in ColleKe-lane, and also a national school; in the latter, Jifty boys and fifty girls are educated. Halsall'd school, in the same street, is for the education, free, of twenty children ; and Taubman's school, in College- green, is for teaching twenty-five boys navigation, and, the usual branches of learning, gratuitously. The market-house and assembly-rooms were built in 1830, and are situate in the centre of the town. The weekly market is held on Saturday.

Ballasalla is a village of prepossessing and respec- table appearance, consisting of about one hundred houses ; it is situate in the parish of Malew, nearly two miles north of Castletown, at the poiiit where the, Peel and Douglas roads separate. This is the largest and most English-looking village in the island; the roads in the vicinity are eeiierally lined with neatly cut hedge-row.s ; and the country around being well shel*, tered with wood, and varied by gently-swelling emi-, nenccs, the prospects, though not very extensive, are

IlDoUGLAS, the most conj^iderable town and sea- ' of Refuge was erected on St. Mary's rock, as a beacon port in the island, is 10 miles n.e. ot Castletown, 11 and also a retreat for mariners shipwrecked in the iiearlyE.ofPeel,16s.of Ramsey, 72 N.w. of Liverpool, bay of this coasit. One of the most attractive fea- 40 s. w. of Whitehaven, 75 n.e. by e. of Dublin, and tures in the contour of Douglas is the beautiful stone 144 s. of Greenock. of the town is triangular, and, in this respect, it has been compared to the Manx Arms, which are three legs, with the appropriate motto of ' Sladil quociinque jeheris,' referring to its insular situation regarding the three kingdoms. Douglas is well supplied with water, from a reservoir constructed a little above the Cres- cent; and brilliantly lighted with g^s, by a company whose works are situate on the south quay. The har- bour is esteemed the best dry one in the Irish ^ea, and admits vessels of considerable burthen - the depth of water, at spring tides, being from twelve to twenty feet. Severd surveys have beei) made, of late years, with the design of making Doualas bay a harbour of refuge forvessels navigating the Irish sea: Sir VVilliam Hillary, Bait., wrote a pamphlet upon this imiiortrint subject in 1826; in 1835, Sir John Rennie published the report of hi* survey of the hay of Douglas, recom- mending the construction of various works ; and in the same year Captain Denham, of the royal navy, was de- puted by the dock trustees of Liverpool to survey the bay of Douglas, and report on its capabilities for being rendeied ahariiour of the description so much wanted: this report proposed the erection of certain works, the immense outline of which seemed to form an insur- mountable obstarle to the accomplishment of the de- sired object; *till, however, the more it vvas considered, the necessity for forming such a haven became the more apparent : it has been proved that a very large amount of propeity, sometimes exceeding £50,000. an- nually, has been lost between the coasts of Britain and Ireland, from the destitution of an asylum to protect merchandize and life. A new jetty, from the opposite

the goodness of the sands, and the uncorrupted purity of the ocean wave, render it one of the most agieeable bathing-places in this part of Europe. Bathing ma- chines are provided by different parties ; hot, cold, shower and vapour liaths are constructed, in a neat and comfortable manner, by Mr. Geneste, in Bath-place, and by Mr. Heron at his hotel - the latter edifice once the princely castle of the Duke of Atliol ; it is now fitted up in a style not excelled, piobably, in the em- pire ; it has accommodation for one hundred and fifty visiters at the same moment - and the woods, lawns and gardens are proportionately extensive : the castle is nearlv a mile north of Douglas, bordering on the beach. The town contains many convenient and re- spectable inns and hotels ; and, for those who prefi r private domicile, lodgings of the most genteel and com- fortable character may be leadily obtained. Douglas supports public lil'raries, news-rooms and billiard- looms ; and dancing and card as.semlirn s are frequent. The neighbourhood of Douglas is well wooded, and embel- lished with many elegant mansions - affording pleasing and varied landscapes, although limited in extent. Horse-races will in future he held annually, on a course formed in this year {1837} , about half a mile above the village of Kirk Onchan, and two miles and a half north of the town. Boating parties are numerous and fre- quent, and a regatta takes place in the spacious bay. The manufactures of Douglas are not of much im- portance, except the long-established one for linen and sail-cloth of Mt-ssrs. Moore; another, for coarse and fine woollen cloths and blankets, at Union Mills,

There are many other benevolent and charitable institutions in the town, which evince, the philanthropic spirit that exists amongst the inhabi- tants of Douglas. LONAN PARISH and the Village of LAXEY.

JljONAN is a mountainous parish in the sheading of Garff, on the east coast, between iMaughold and On- chan ; nearly four miles long from north to south, and about three in breadth from east to west. Much of the surface is barren and unsusceptible of culture ; hut the lower grounds are proiluctive, and the valleys fertile. The sea borderint; this district abounds with fish. Se- veral memorials of the early ayes arrest the attention of the observer in this parish - particulaily two druidi- eal tempiss ; one on the north side of Laxey Hill, and the other about two miles from Laxey, near the road leading to Douglas. The parish church is situate on an elevated site; the living is a vicarage, in the appoint- ment of the CI own.

Laxey is a small fishing and manufacturing village in the above parish, eight miles north-east of Douglas

and the like distance south of Ramsey; situate in the bottom of a deep valley, inclosed on every side but the east with high precipitous hills ; it is composed of about forty houses, arranged on the road side, near the beach. There is one brewery in the village, and anotiier at a short distance above it ; dye-woiks, and an extensive paper nianufactoiy, are in the vicinity ; and about half a mile further on (a mile above tlie village) are the va- luable lead-mines wrought by the Laxey Mining Com- pany, wlio employ about one hundred and fifty people : the mines produce, monthly, about fifty tons of lead ore, and one hundred tons of ' black jack,' or ' blend,' besides copper ; the lead ore renders about fifteen hun- dred pounds weight of lead, and one hundred ounces of silver, per ton ; the blend is subsequently manufac- tured into the composition denominated 'speltre.'

There are two vestiges of antiquity to be observed in this pa- rish - the ruins of St. Trinian's chapel, a little beyond Crosby; and a druidical temple, on the north side of Mount Murray. A fair is annually held at Greba, in this district, on the 2nd of February.

Crosby is a small but respectable village, on the road between Douglas and Peel ; five miles west of the former, and about the same distance east of the latter. The Wesleyan niethodists have a neat chapel at this village, close by the border of the high road. MICHAEL PARISH and the Village of KIRK-MICHAEL.

ivJiICHAEL parish is situate in the sheading of its name, in tiie northern division of the island ; it is five miles and a half in length from north to south, and four in breadth from east to west. Those portions of the district that margin the shore, and the northern tracts, are fertile and well cnltivated ; but the principal part is studded with lofty hills, tliHt seem to defy the efforts of the agriculturist at. reclamation.

The village of Kirk-Michael is 16 miles north of Douglas, the like distance from Castletown, seven north-east of Peel, and nine west of Ramsey; situate on the main road from the last-named town, not far from the sea-shore. At the south end of the village is a comfortable inn and a court-house ; in the latter the northern deemster holds his coart once a fortnight,

and the vicar-general sits on tlie last Thursday of each month. The new parish chur(h, dedicated to Saint Michael, and erected in 1835, is an ornament to the village; the crown appoints to the living, which is a vicarage: the chnrch-yard contains the remains of many of the bishops ; the inscription on the tomb of Bishop Wilson, to the east of the church, is worthy of notice on account of its primitive simplicity. Near the church gate is a high, square, runic pillar of blue sionc, covered over with singularly involved devices, which tradition attributes to the honour of a Norwe- gian chief. About a mile to the ea^t, on the road to Ramsey, is Bishops' Court, the episcopal residence of the head of the Manx church. A fair is held for cattle, and hiring servants, on the 10th of October.

the agriculturist; but the minerals that it embosoms amply compensate for the stcrilily of the surtate. The principal mines are those of lead, situate at Foxdale, and on the we^t side of Soutii Barrule ; they are wrought by the Isle of Man .Mining Compy. who employ about two hundred and fifty individuals ; they produce from two hundred and eighty to three hundred tons of ore per month, which is shipped at Peel and Douglas for the river Dee. The beautiful waterfall of Glenmoy (or Glenmoij) is situate on the west coast, three miles south of Peel, and is visited by most strangers.

EEL is a small sea-port, in the parish of German, Douglas, and seven from Kirk-Michael; situate nearly in the centre of the western coast of the island. Tlie town, which is composed of five irregular streets and some lanes, is chiefly remarkable for the ruins of its castle and cathedral, which stand on a small islet of rock, about three hundred yards from the town : the walls are flanked with towers, and inclose an area of about two acres, now conveited into a sheep-walk ; it is supposed to be of higher antiquity than even Custle Rushen, and in it some of the eaily kings of Scotland are said to have received their education ; a strong stone wall connects the castle with the main land.

Before the purchase of the royalty of Man, this fortres.s was gairisoned by troops in the pay of the propiietor of the island ; and the natives have a traiiiiion that a black dog, called in thtir language ' Moddey Doo," used to present himself every night before the fire, to the consternation of the guard ; on this old tradition Sir Walter Scott has founded his allusion, in the 'Lay of the last Minstrel,' to the 'spectre hound of Man.' (The appearance of the castle, from the south shore, is faithfully displayed in the vignette, on the map of the island, which emhellisbes this work.) The cathedral of St. Germain was erected about the year 1245, and the remaining arches of the transept sufficiently testify its former magnificence. This iskt

likewise contains the ruins of a cliuicli dedicated to St. Patrick, besides the fragments ot otlier structures. The pnrt has the convenience of a good quay, erected in 1810, with a lighthouse at its extremity ; and n jetty of substantial masonry was constructed in 1830, by tiie commissioners of tiie harbour, as a protection from the heavy swell of the Irisli sea. The hening fishery may be considered the staple business of I'eei ; there are, however, several other branches of some conse- quence, as two breweries, a lanyard, boat-bnildin(< yards, and a corn-mill ; the town also possesses an e.vcellent, well estibli^hed inn,called the ' Peel Castle.' The places of worship are the parish church, and chapels for VVesleyan and primitive methodists : the chuich, which stands in the western part of the lown, and is dedicated to St. Peter, was rebuilt in 1816; the living is a vicarage, in the gilt of tlie bishop. The grammar-school of Peel was endowed so early as 1746, and the mathematical school was founded in 1763; there is, also, another sennnary, suppoited by funds bequeathed by Pliilip Christian, in 1654, for educa- tional purposes. The neighbourhood of Peel is very plea-ant, and contains many respectable family man- sions, some surrounded by fine limber. Parties of pleasure to the mountain-torrent fall of Glenmoij, three miles to the south-west, are frequent, particularly on

the arrival of visiters to this part of the Isle. The rocks along the southern shore are in some places hollowed into caves by the incessant operations of ihe sea; and on the northern strand aaates and cornelians, fit for seals and brooches, are occasionally picked up. A weekly market is held on Saturday, and an annual fair for cattle on the 28ih of Marcli.

German parish is situate in the sheadine of Glan- faba, on the western and southern coast of the island ; it extends about four miles and a half from north to south, and three and a half from east to west; tlie surface is much diversified with hills and valleys, the latter very fertile and productive.

St. John's is a small village, three miles east of Peel and seven west of Douglas, consisting of a few houses skirting the spacious green on wliich stands the Tynwald mount, whence every law is pron)Hlgaied to the people: the form of the mount is circular; it is about eighteen feet high, and appears like three plat- forms ot earth placed one above another, the upper- most being attained by a flight of steps cut in the turf on the eastern side. The places of w(irship are St. Jcdin's chapel, situate on the border of the green, and a Weslejan chapel at its western end. Fairs are an- nually held here, for cattle, on the 17ili of iMarch, 1st of May, 5th of July, and 1st of November.

11«/AMSEY is a market town and sea-pnrt, princi- Castletown, the like distance N. of Douglas, 16 N. e. of Peel, and 8 N. of Laxey ; situate on the north- eastern coast of the island. 'I'he houses are well built, the streets mostly spacious, clean and in good repair, but inegularly airanged around the market place, which was much enlarged and improved in 1830, and is now one of the most complete and convenient in the Isle. The hay, in front of the town, is capacious, and affords perfect shelter fiom all storms not coming from the east ; the anchorage is eood, and the quay is fur- nished with a lighthouse. The harbour was materially improved in 1836, by the erection of an additional pier nearly parallel with the old one. From Ibis port the principal part of the cattle, horses, giain and other produce not required tor the home market, is shipped ; the imports consist of coal, timber, drapery, iron- mongery, &c. Many of the inhabitants are engaj?ed, during the season, in the cod and herring fisheries ; and Ramsey itself is a place of considerable business : there are three small hat manufactories, two brew- eries, and two extensive yards for ship-building, from whence vessels of from five hundred to six hundred tons are frequently launched. The river Sulby flows into the harbour of Ramsey ; it is considered the largest stream on the island, and contains excellent trout. The road from hence to the Point of Ayre is carried over the river, near the town, by a bridge of three small arches. In 1760 the fleet taken by Commodore Elliot from the French Admiral Tliurot, off the wessern coast of the Isle of Man, was brought into Ramsey bay. The court-house, which was erected in 1800, and re- paired and improved in this year (1837), stands near the centre of the town : in it the high bailiff (whose jurisdiction extends over the paj^slies of Andreas, Bride, Jurby, Lezayte and Maughold,) holds a court every Saturday, for the recoiery of debts under foity shillings ; the northern deemster, and also the vicar-

general, hold courts once a fortnight, and a court of common law sits in the months of Febniary, May, July and October. The town is much resorted to in summer, and every acC(mimodation, either public or private, is afforded to visiters - there being two excel- lent and comfortable inns, and many most respectable lodging-houses. The sands are remarkably fine, and of great extent ; and few places enjoy the advantage of a more inviting beach for sea-bathing. A steam- packet calls ihree times a week on its voyage to Glas- gow, and another communirates with Liverpool; and there are coaches daily from this town to Douglas. The places of worship are two chuiches of the esta- blishment - St. Paul's, in the Market-place, and St. Peter's, in Chuich-street ; chapels for Wesleyan and primitive methodists, and the united seceders from the Scotch kirk. There is an excellent natinnal school, likewise a savings' bank, and several sick clubs. The prospect around Ramsey is agreeably diversified and picturesque: the lofty mountains of Snafield and Bar- rule rear their heads on the south-west; to the west stretches a fine and fertile undulating district, inter- spersed with neat mansions and sheltering planta- tions; while to the east the agitated and frequently turbulent blue wave contrasts with the calm scenery on I the island. iiUSHEN (or Christ Rushen) parish, in the shearfii'g of its name, lies at the south-western ex- tremity of the island ; it is about five miles and a half in length from north to south, by an average breadth of one and a half from east to west. Tiie church, si- tuate four miles west of Castletown, near the centre of the parish, i> a pl4in unadorned edifice, rel)U)lt in 1775, and adapted to contain a congregation of four hundred and fifty persons ; the livitit; is a vicarage, in the gift of the crown. The parish scliool is adjacent 10 the church ; and about a quarter of a mile to the south is a scIjooI for girls, supported by a small en- dowment. The central part of the district is fertile productive land, and is as well cultivated, perhaps, as any locality in England ; but the north and south por- tions are bleak barren highlamls. This parish contains plenty of limestone of the best (luality, and lead ore is found ill several places : the old mines at Glenshass, between Port St. Mary and Spanish Head, have been re-opened by the Isle of Man Mining Company; the ore from these mines is said to produce two hundred iiunces of silver per ton.

Port Erin (so called from the bay opening towards Ireland) is a small village and sea-port in the above- parish, nearly five miles west of Castletown and 15 south-west of Douglas. The village comprises about forty dwellings, a small Wesleyan chapel, and a com- fortable inn ; the employment of the inhaliitanis is fishing and husbandry. The bay, which forms a natu- ral square, has good anchorage; and vessels of two liundred tons burthen can come close to the rock, on the south side, in favourable weather. Breda Head, a bold and abrupt precipice, forms the north boundary of the bay. Port Erin is the most convenient place for taking a boat for the purpose of visiting the Calf of Man, which is distant about three miles south-west.

Erin, situate on the western side of a fine spacious bay, on the south shore of the island, four miles west of Castletown, fifteen south of Peel, and the same dis- tance south-west of Douglas. The village consists of about eighty houses, principally erected close to the harbour, which is protected ftom the violence of the sea by a substantially built stone pier, two hundred and tliirty yards long and eight yards broad, with a lighthouse on its noithern extremity. To complete the security of the port, a new breakwater is about to be constructed (about two hundred yaids south of the present pier), which will afford shelter from any wind. More than fifty light ves>^els, from fifteen to forty tons burden, belong to this little place; many of them are employed in the fishery during the season. The Car- rack rock, near the middle of the bay, is dangerous, being covered at high water. A little south of the vil- lage, on the shore, below high-water mark, is a stra- tified quarry of limestone, of superior quality, from which the new jetty at Douglas, and many other piers and quays, have been constructed. At Mount Gawne, about one mile on the road to Castletown, is the ex- tensive brewery of Messrs. Gawne and Connal. A national school and a Wesleyan methodist chapel, are in the village of Port St, Mary.

The Calf of Man is a small island separated from Man by a dangerous channel of five hundred yards width, its area is five hundred and sixty-nine acres, of which nearly one hundred are cultivated ; and it contains one farm-house, three cottages and two light- houses : the present occupier, Mr. Shepherd, is erect- ing a corn-mill and providing a threshing-n)achine. Tlie surface is uneven - in some places elevated from four to five hundred feet above the sea ; and great part of the coast is composed of high rocky cliffs. Rabbits have multiplied here to a somewhat valuable amount, not less than from two thousand four hundred to two thousand eight hundred being annually exported,
