The Free Cabin is significant for embodying the distinctive characteristics of a rare vernacular house type and for its potential to yield information regarding nineteenth century agricultural housing. Description: The Free Cabin is a rectangular, 14' x 20' Single-Pen structure situated on a stacked fieldstone foundation with horizontal wood siding covering the exterior. Single entrance bays consisting of wooden doors are located on the front and rear elevations of the structure. An exterior brick chimney is located on the south elevation, and the roof consists of standing seam metal sheets. The cabin is located approximately from State Route 121/U.S. Highway 25/Peach Orchard Road. The immediate setting of the cabin consists of a dense wooded area with no yard or formal landscaping.

History: Based on previous historical and archaeological studies of the Free Cabin, the resource is situated on a tract of land historically associated with the Rhodes family. These studies, which were based on the material culture of the property and personal communications with local residents, concluded that the Free Cabin might include remnants of one of at least four slave or tenant cabins associated with a local nineteenth century plantation. Deed research, however, was unsuccessful in identifying either the architects of the cabin or the former occupants of the property.
