Granite Hill Plantation historically consisted of acres amassed by Andrew Jackson Lane, a wealthy Hancock County planter. The plantation was one of the largest in the county and is associated with the antebellum agricultural reform movement, as well as granite quarrying. The Granite Hill Plantation Provision House is the only extant structure related to A. J. Lane at the former plantation site. Description: Located approximately 100'to the rear (south) of the former site of the main plantation house, the Provision House is a two story, octagonal structure made out of doubled, cut granite block. Wood remaining in the interior shows evidence of a fire, and the structure is in ruin condition with no interior partitions, floors, or roof.

The first floor has a door opening on the northwest and west elevations. The southeast elevation has a single window opening, with three holes in the lintel and lug sill, both of solid granite, to receive vertical iron bars. At ground level on the northwest elevation is the frame for a small iron door. The second floor of the structure has door opening directly above the one on the northwest elevation, as well as window openings on the northeast, southeast, and southwest elevations. All three windows on the second floor have three vertical iron bars let into the lintel and sill. Recesses in the interior walls indicate the location of the floor joists and similar recesses suggest a possible attic floor.

Two courses of flat granite stones form a slight corbel at the top edge of the structure. History: Constructed ca. the Granite Hill Plantation Provision House was one of several outbuildings associated with the main plantation house. While probably used as a provision house, several references indicate that it may have been used as a smokehouse. A contributor to the Southern Cultivator visited Granite Hill in and remarked, "Everything there is of a permanent character, even to a two-story smoke house of handsomely dressed granite". The structure is also similar in design to a dovecote constructed in Louisiana, and may have been used for this purpose or simply modeled after the form.
