Regional context, not property-specific
evidence. The National Weather Service names
Whiting, the town this property stands in, in 35 storm reports between 1994 and 2024: 19 hail, 10 thunderstorm wind, 4 tornado, 2 funnel cloud.
No death or injury is recorded in these reports. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office
filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date
opens the federal record of that event.
The office received a photo of significant damage to siding and windows on a home in Whiting, Iowa. This was accompanied by significant car damage and tree damage in the surrounding area. Hail was estimated to have ranged from golf ball to baseball sized.
Hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter fell for several minutes in the Whiting area. The hail was from the same supercell thunderstorm that produced a EF3 tornado a brief time later in the Mapleton area.
Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at over 60 mph caused considerable tree damage in the Whiting area which damaged a few buildings. The winds also broke at least one center pivot in the area.
This tornado touched down east of Macy, Nebraska, on the Iowa side of the Missouri River. This was the second tornado producing supercell to track across Monona county this night, touching down in open country with no apparent damage. The tornado was first reported by law enforcement and was also caught on film by a tv meteorologist. Initially the location was reported as Macy, Nebraska, but after further radar reviews, along with accounts from storm chasers at the scene, it was determined the tornado touched down west of Whiting, Iowa, or several miles east of Macy.
