The Past and Present of Lake County, Illinois, published 1877 names this settlement in its chapter on Fremont Township. These are the passages that mention it, exactly as the scans read.

There was afterward a post office established near the center of the town, called Fremont Center, and subsequently another, on Section 23, called Dean's Corners. A small village has grown up at the latter place, and it has become quite a center of trade for the surrounding country. The name of the place has recently been changed to Ivanhoe.

The first death which occurred in what is now the town of Fremont was Oliver Booth, who died in the Spring of 1840. He was buried at Bangs' Lake. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Samuel Hurlbut, father of Henry Hurlbut, now living in the town at Ivanhoe.
