Population over time
2 figuresHatfield fell from 54 to 53 between 2010 and 2020. These are the recorded population figures Wikidata holds for this place, reached through the Geographic Names Information System number this page is keyed on rather than by name, so they belong to this place and not to another of the same name. Most are census counts, but not all are: an early figure may be a founding or settlement estimate, and an estimate published within five years of a census is left out. The change column is computed, and is left blank where more than 20 years separate a figure from the one before it, because a gap that long is not a change between two counts.

On the Milwaukee railroad, seven miles southeast of Pipestone, is Hatfield, a village containing a postoffice, one or two stores, a school and a church. It is in the exact center of section 3-5, Grange township. The village was one of the first established in the county, and it has a history extending over a period of nearly thirty-two years.

The beginnings of a town were made in 1880. the first improvement being a windmill.- \ side track was laid late in August, and the initial building improvement followed soon after. The Colman Lumber company established a lumber yard, and a grain warehouse was put up by Bonner & Hyde, who bought grain that fall. In November n store building graced the site, erected by I. N. Converse, who started a general store. Soon after the postoffice was established with Mr. Converse as postmaster.^ has been christened Hatfield, and. although its onl.v semblance to a town is the rather metropolitan aspect of its windmill aforesaid, there are vast possibilities susceptible of development, .and we see no reason why it shouldn't become a great commercial center."

In tlie years that liave elapsed since Hatfield was given a place on the map, the village has only slightly outgrown its original proportions. The townsite, made to consist of thirteen hlocks, was surveyed November 6, 1882, by George B. Woodworth. Three years later, on December -S. 1885, the plat was dedicated by Samuel H. Graves, acting for the land firm of Close Bros. & Co. In 18S.T Close Bros. & Co. threatened to establish lipadquarters at Hatfield, instead nf at Pipestone, but this did not eventuate, the people of Pipestone granting certain concessions demanded by the land company.
