4 since 1997Regional context, not property-specific evidence. The National Weather Service names Oriole in 4 storm reports between 1997 and 2018: 2 tornado, 1 hail, 1 flood. No death or injury is recorded in these reports. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date opens the federal record of that event.
| When | Event | Place named | Harm | What the report says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January 2008 | Tornado (EF1) | Oriole | $75,000 | The tornado touched down along Highway 177, where a hay barn was destroyed and one storage building sustained major damage. One house was damaged when it was struck by large portions of the hay barn. Another house sustained extensive shingle damage. Utility poles were snapped. A large 5000 gallon steel fuel tank converted for use as a culvert was moved. Witnesses within a few miles of the tornado reported a funnel cloud. Due to the hilly and wooded nature of the terrain, the observers may not have seen contact with the ground. The tornado crossed the Trail of Tears State Park, where numerous large trees were snapped or uprooted. Many of these trees were oak trees that were not in leaf during this mid-winter tornado. The downed trees in the park blocked in a couple of hikers. The average path width was about 150 yards. Peak winds were estimated near 95 mph. The tornado proceeded across the Mississippi River into Union County, Illinois. |
| May 2018 | Tornado (EF1) | Oriole | $25,000 | Peak winds were estimated near 90 mph. The tornado touched down on Highway V near County Road 607, then moved east across forested and hilly terrain. The tornado lifted as it crossed Highway 177 at the Trail of Tears State Park. Dozens of trees, some large, were broken or uprooted. Several power poles were snapped from fallen trees. The tornado was sighted by numerous people, and video was taken by at least one individual. The parent storm produced two small tornadoes on the other side of the Mississippi River near Wolf Lake, Illinois within the next 10 minutes. |
| October 2009 | Flood | Oriole | $20,000 | A prolonged period of moderate rain with pockets of heavy rain caused fairly widespread flooding of creeks and roads. Two water rescues were conducted along the Whitewater River. Near Millersville, a swift water rescue was conducted after a motorist drove into a flooded area on County Road 481. The person was in waist-deep water for about 30 minutes before a passer-by noticed the incident. Another water rescue was conducted on County Road 379 west of Gordonville. A female driver went into floodwater and was retrieved by fire and recue personnel with no injuries. Cape La Croix Creek was out of its banks at Arena Park on the northwest side of Cape Girardeau. Deep water was over N Highway near Randle. Standing water covered many fields. |
