Regional context, not property-specific
evidence. The National Weather Service names
Nehawka, the town this property stands in, in 10 storm reports between 1999 and 2024: 4 hail, 3 tornado, 1 funnel cloud, 1 flash flood.
No death or injury is recorded in these reports. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office
filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date
opens the federal record of that event.
Tornado removed roof from house. Roof over garage uplifted and displaced. House moved slightly on foundation. Several large pines & oak trees snapped. Additional damage to power poles was noted, along with total destruction of a farm outbuilding near Highway 75 and Baxter Loop.
This tornado started just to the southwest of the city of Nehawka and generally traveled to the northwest through its lifespan. The tornado was filmed by numerous storm chasers and general public. The tornado remain generally in rural areas, but did impact a couple of farmsteads. The most significant damage occurred along Havelock Ave where a home was destroyed. The damage at this residence was consistent with EF2 damage. Another farmstead was impacted south of Knabe Dr where several outbuildings were completely destroyed. Otherwise trees were uprooted or damaged along the path.
A tornado uprooted large trees and downed transmission towers from around Nehawka to near Union. Two houses sustained major damage and "heavy damage" was reported to 30 other houses. Some of the damage could have also been caused by straight line winds that occurred across parts of the area shortly before the reported time of the tornado. The strong winds also knocked power out across most of Union. The track of the tornado was around 4 miles long and was spawned from the same supercell complex that produced the long tracked f4 tornado earlier which caused extensive damage in the Hallam area.
