Menominee, the town this property stands in, in 10 storm reports between 1995 and 2022: 7 thunderstorm wind, 2 hail, 1 tornado.
No death or injury is recorded in these reports. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office
filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date
opens the federal record of that event.
This tornado started about 4 1/2 miles northwest of Fordyce near Highway US 81 and moved southeast. The tornado crossed Nebraska Highway 12 and passed 1/2 mile north of Bow Valley. Little damage was noted as the tornado crossed through rural, agricultural, areas. The tornado made a right turn and headed south-southeast about 2 miles south of Wynot. The tornado struck a farmstead which destroyed a barn, knocked over trees, and did minor structural damage to a home. The tornado then flipped over a center pivot irrigation system and produced minor roof damage to a home before dissipating.
Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at least 60 mph caused extensive damage in south Yankton. Numerous tree limbs and power lines were downed by the storm. There was also structural damage to Riverside Auto Body. Here the roof was removed, and a number of storage units were destroyed. Damage was scattered for a half block downstream from the site.
Law enforcement estimated that thunderstorm winds reached around 70 mph. Winds from this same thunderstorm downed trees in the Hartington area, which is several miles to the southeast, several minutes later.
