From the record
“The Commercial Hotel in Verdigre, Nebraska, also known as the Verdigre Hotel, is a hotel built in 1900 without indoor plumbing and without gas or electricity, but rather with use of kerosene lamps for lighting. With Verdigre the end of a railroad line and the hub of hog drives, the town needed more hotel space than was supplied by two hotels built previously.”

Verdigre, the town this property stands in, in 56 storm reports between 1994 and 2024: 36 hail, 11 thunderstorm wind, 5 tornado, 2 flash flood.
No death or injury is recorded in these reports. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office
filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date
opens the federal record of that event.
An NWS flood survey showed water depths in portions of town reach 1 to 3 feet. The flooding most affected the east portions of town, closest to the Verdigree Creek. Farm homes were flooded out. One was a fifth generation farm home. Property damage amounts for the entire county are in the Niobrara River flood entry.
Thunderstorm winds estimated at over 60 mph caused tree and other damage from around 16 miles west of Verdigre into Verdigre. Sixteen KV transmission lines/poles were downed 16 miles west of Verdigre causing loss of power in several surrounding towns for around 3 hours, with trees or large tree limbs downed from that location into Verdigre.
Rainfall of 2 to 4 inches caused flash flooding along sections of Verdigre Creek near Verdigre. A local park was flooded and the road leading into it was washed out. Farm fields and county roads were also flooded in the area.
Thunderstorms dropped very heavy rain over parts of Knox county, especially near and southwest of Verdigre and rainfall of 4 to 5 inches was reported at a few locations. The heavy rain washed out a bridge southwest of Verdigre and also washed a culvert several hundred yards downstream.
A brief tornado was observed by a trained spotter in far southwestern Knox county. Before the touchdown, the storm produced several funnel cloud reports as it tracked south along the Holt and Knox county line. The tornado did little or no apparent damage.
