Population over time
2 figuresAztec fell from 6,763 to 6,201 between 2010 and 2020. These are the recorded population figures Wikidata holds for this place, reached through the Geographic Names Information System number this page is keyed on rather than by name, so they belong to this place and not to another of the same name. Most are census counts, but not all are: an early figure may be a founding or settlement estimate, and an estimate published within five years of a census is left out. The change column is computed, and is left blank where more than 20 years separate a figure from the one before it, because a gap that long is not a change between two counts.

Storms near this place
5 since 1997Regional context, not property-specific evidence. The National Weather Service names Aztec in 5 storm reports between 1997 and 2017: 2 flash flood, 2 thunderstorm wind, 1 hail. No death or injury is recorded in these reports. Each account below is quoted exactly as the forecast office filed it, from the NOAA Storm Events Database, and each date opens the federal record of that event.
| When | Event | Place named | Harm | What the report says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| August 2015 | Flash Flood | Aztec | $1,000,000 | The Blanco Arroyo overflowed its banks and, combined with heavy rain across the area, led to significant flash flooding. Firefighters rescued a few individuals from the roofs of their homes, otherwise no major injuries or fatalities were reported. Several homes were reportedly shifted off their foundation and a propane tank at one of those homes was swept away in the flood waters. Multiple classrooms were damaged at three area schools, causing all schools to be closed on the 27th and one school, Lydia Rippey Elementary, to be closed on the 28th. The Aztec Municipal Golf Course at Hidden Valley was closed until further notice due to damages incurred from the flooding. A large rock slide closed Navajo Road 36 at mile marker 28, with other smaller road closures reported around Aztec. Measured rainfall in the area ranges from an inch to a little over an inch and a half. |
| August 2015 | Thunderstorm Wind | Aztec | $150,000 | Damaging winds caused multiple trees to fall over, landing on houses and power lines. This caused power outages for portions of Aztec, Flora Vista, and Crouch Mesa. |
| May 2017 | Thunderstorm Wind | Aztec | $20,000 | Power poles blown over onto roadway in Aztec. Minor damage reported to several vehicles. |
| August 1997 | Flash Flood | Aztec | - | Three to 6 inches of mud and debris covered parts of Highway 550 in Aztec following heavy rain of 1 to 2 inches on the mesa above town near the airport. Several other city streets were temporarily closed by the runoff. |
| October 2006 | Hail | Aztec | - | no account filed |

What the paper printed
7,806 wordsFront pages of the local paper, read from the Library of Congress scans: 5 issues spread across its run from 1890 to 1912, 7,806 words in total. Each is reproduced on its own page, exactly as the recogniser returned it.
These pages read less well than anything else here, and the number is worth stating: about three words in four come through cleanly, against nine in ten for the building records. An 1896 broadsheet sets eight-point type in seven columns on microfilm, which is the hardest thing in this archive to read by machine. We tested our own recognisers against the Library's and they were not better, so the Library's text is what appears, with the wholly unreadable columns removed. Read it as a guide to what the paper covered, and follow the link to the scan before quoting anything.
