10-90) United States Department of the Interior National Park Service NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES CONTINUATION SHEET Toronto World War I Monument The Toronto World War I Monument is located a public park in the heart of this Ohio River community streetscape (photos #1-4). The WWI Monument is a bronze Beaux-Arts style memorial sculpture resting on ar octagonal granite base (photos #5-7). The sculpture consists of three figures - a centrally positioned classical female figure representing Liberty flanked by figures of a soldier and sailor in military uniforms of the World War I period. Eight bronze plaques are mounted on each face of the octagonal granite pedestal listing the names of 300 local citizens who served during World War I and one plaque with a dedicatory inscription (photo #8).

A The monument is centered in a 60' x 60' parcel adjacent to the former City Building which was constructed in 1892 and both are located at the northwest corner of the intersection of Market Street and North Third Street. During the summer of 2004 the monument was carefully restored by the McKay Lodge Fine Arts Conservation Lab of Oberlin, Ohio. The small corner park was re-designed and landscaped by community volunteers. The statue and base have not been altered since the dedication on November 11, 1919. Given the recent re-design and appointment of the park, it is considered a non-contributing site. It is also significant under Criterion C for its association with Giuseppe Moretti (1857-1935), an internationally recognized Italian-born artisan and master of monumental American, Beaux-Arts sculptures.

The Toronto Monument represents Moretti's first of what would be eleven other WWI monuments he subsequently executed in the United States and one of three known Moretti sculptures in Ohio. It is believed to be among the earliest group of WWI monuments erected in the United States and the second oldest free standing WWI monument differing from what subsequently became the prototypical Victorious Soldier or "Doughboy" icon. The monument meets Criteria Consideration F by virtue of the fact its design, age and symbolic value have invested it with its own exceptional significance. Anchoring a small public park in Toronto, the Monument, also known as "Soldiers and Sailors," was "erected by the citizens of Toronto and vicinity in honor of the men of this community who answered the call of their country in the World War" [monument inscription].

Three hundred area soldiers, sailors and marines enlisted their service in the war effort, and of these, eleven made the Supreme Sacrifice. Giuseppe Moretti's selection to design and execute the Toronto monument was partly fortuitous - during the late teens he was living in Pittsburgh where he had built a studio and completed many important commissions such as the Panthers on Panther Hollow Bridge, the Stephen Foster Memorial and the E. M. Bigelow sculpture. Toronto, Ohio's World War I Monument stands alone within the context of Ohio's WW I commemorative monuments. As a work of public art it ranks among the most sophisticated and moving of the state's military sculptures.

At the dedication ceremony in Toronto on November 11, 1919, observed by a crowd of nearly 15,000, Moretti stated, "A memorial should be erected to a single purpose as a tribute to the noble deeds of our heroes and should be inspired by the worthiness and sentiments of the human heart." (Herald-Star, November 11, 1919). Geneva Mercer, Moretti's long-time pupil and creative assistant, described the Toronto monument as "a beautiful figure of Victory accompanied by Soldier and Sailor." (Complete List, p.1). Of the forty-two World War I Monuments identified in Ohio, the Toronto monument appears to be the second free-standing WWI sculpture erected in the state and among the first of its type dedicated in the nation (Conrad, America's Americans is the "Spirit of America Doughboy," copyrighted in 1920 by Ernest Vequesney (1876-1936), an Indiana native.

The Spirit Doughboy is a WW I infantryman advancing through No Man's Land amidst stumps grenade. The Spirit Doughboy designed by Vequesney has been documented in 136 locations in 35 states. Eleven Vequesney Doughboy statues are credited to exist in Ohio (Chamber Monthly). ' The Reading, Ohio, WWI Memorial, a concrete doughboy, was dedicated on June 8, 1919. dedicated in Ohio. The Toronto monument is also significant in that its Beaux-Arts representation is unique, (Rev. 10-90) and barbed wire entanglements, his rifle held in his left hand while his right hand is raised high, holding a WW I Monuments; NY Times 9/29/19; 10/19/19). For forty years he sculpted owned and operated his own marble quarry in Talladega, Alabama. Employing the Beaux-Arts technique, Moretti's sculptures tended to be heroic in the classical tradition and often featured feminine figures, including his wife, Dorthea. The John Patterson Monument at Hills and Dales Park in Dayton, Ohio (1925) is representative of Moretti's heroic symbolism. His other Ohio commission is the 10-foot bronze statue of Simon Perkins (1895) in Akron.

Moretti's creation of the Colonnade Sculpture at Highland Park in Pittsburgh (1900) with its female centerpiece was later evoked in his Toronto Monument. Perhaps Moretti's most widely recognized work is his 56-foot tall iron sculpture Vulcan (1904) in Birmingham, Alabama. A prolific artist, Moretti's forty year portfolio includes twelve World War I memorials, nineteen monumental works, six church sculptures, twenty-four memorial tablets, fourteen cemetery memorials, twenty-seven sculptures in marble, bronze and aluminum, and twenty-seven bronze statuettes (Complete List). In contrast to Civil War monuments, which adorn the center of many Ohio towns and courthouse squares, there are fewer sculptural, three-dimensional monuments devoted to Ohio's World War I dead.

It should be noted, however, a comprehensive inventory of military related structures and objects in Ohio has not been conducted. A Save Outdoor Sculpture inventory [SOS] was completed in several targeted Ohio cities, but most small towns and villages have not been covered.
