The building sets back from the road, surrounded by an intact grass lawn area and the remnants of a gravel lane from the road to the building. The building is located next to the Detroit, Toledo, and Ironton Railway site and also adjacent to the "train stop" in the crossroads community of Cove. Jackson and beyond, for area residents. The façade is symmetrical with single paneled wood doors with wood surrounds and rectangular transoms located at both ends.

A wood sign with "SCIOTO GRANGE #1234" is centered on the east elevation. The 4-bay north side elevation has double hung 2-over-2 wood windows with painted glazing. A concrete block exterior chimney is located between the second and third bay on this elevation. A small wood sided privy with wood door is attached to the rear of the building at the northwest corner. The south elevation also has four double hung 2- over-2 wood windows with unpainted glazing. room is heated with a wood stove. The current condition of the property is good and has been well maintained throughout the years by Grange members. NPS Form 10-900 OMB No. 1024-0018 (Rev. 10-90) United States Department of the Interior National Park Service NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES CONTINUATION SHEET Scioto Grange No. 1234 Jackson County, Ohio Statement of Significance The Scioto Grange No. 1234 is nominated under Criterion A as representative of an agrarian social movement significant in the rural history of Scioto and surrounding townships in Jackson County. The National Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry, more commonly know as the Grange, organized on December 4, 1867, in an effort to unite and more effectively represent farmers in the United States.

It was the first general farm organization in the country, and grew rapidly across the agricultural portions of the country actively promoted cooperative marketing and purchasing, and pushed for state and federal legislation favorable and promoted the benefits of cooperative purchasing for farmers. All Grange members were encouraged to subscribe to agricultural periodicals such as the Ohio Farmer. At the state level Grangers actively monitored the agricultural educational curriculum of the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College (Ohio State University) gamble on horse racing, drinking hard liquor and visiting side shows." Nineteenth century Jackson County industrial economy was dominated by mining and iron as part of the productive Hanging Rock region of southeast Ohio. Early agricultural production included horses, cattle, and corn being the principle crop with oats and rye. By 1847 the Jackson County Agricultural Society was formed to hold an annual agricultural fair and promote interest of agriculture. County fairs were held regularly between 1855 and 1882. The fairs were disbanded due to lack of financing and re-organized in 1912 with a permanent fairgrounds established in Wellston in 1913. The Secretary of State's Annual Report to the Governor in 1900 indicated that Jackson County's leading agricultural production were horses, cattle, wheat, oats, corn, hay, and apples. The county had 100,050 acres in pasture and 47, 138 cultivated acres.

In 1900 the total population of Jackson County was 34,248 people with 1112 in Scioto The Scioto Grange No. 1234 is representative of an important movement in Scioto Township and Jackson Township.
