It is located on Miles Road near Chagrin River Road in Bentleyville Ohio and is part of Cleveland Metroparks' South Chagrin Reservation. Bentleyville is adjacent to the Lodge are semi-rural, many with large wooded lots. Look About Lodge stands in an isolated setting and bridle trails that explore a variety of natural habitats. The building has access from Miles Road by a meandering driveway that leads to a 60-car parking lot. The building sits on a flat, open area surrounded by beech, maple, and overall dimensions are 95 x 56 feet including two porches. The walls are made of stacked, oakum-chinked and readily available because of the chestnut blight that killed most chestnut trees in the United States. The wood shake roof (originally slate) has six dormer vents with wood louvers. There are dormers over the upstairs roof with iron hardware.

There are 14 fixed pane and casement windows in steel frames on the main floor. There are two doors and one window on the second floor, the museum. (Drawing 4) Stained wood shutters with added hexagons There are two porches. The eastern one is enclosed, has a flagged floor, and measures 12 x 62 feet. (Drawing 1-2) The original roof had four finials carved by the WPA, two owls and two with birds and mammals (since removed). (Drawing 2) On the south elevation is an open porch and balcony measuring 14 x 26 feet. Its corners are supported by Berea sandstone columns that once included WPA carved gargoyles. (Drawings 1, 3,5) To the north is a small balcony over the kitchen door. (Drawing 4) The Lodge was designed to accommodate up to There have been some changes to the building in recent years. The current roof covered with cedar shakes was installed in 1993.

The south porch needed to be completely removed, and was replaced in 1998 with a similar design using original techniques. As American chestnut is no longer available, white oak was used. The assembly hall measures 62 x 38 feet. It is built over a crawl space and is two stories high. There are outdoor balcony. The two north stairs leads to a balcony with access to the museum. (Photo 6) There are two sandstone fireplaces with stone hearths. The southeast corner includes shelves for the library. (Drawing 1) (Photo 2) The kitchen, entry hall, and lavatory on the first floor and the museum on the second floor all lie to the north of the meeting room. Overall it measures 20 x 34 feet and continues the rustic log design. Stained pine area and darkroom are located in the basement where the CNSC housed a collection of photos and slides for nature identification.

It embodies the American tradition of rustic lodges found in the western inns of the nation's National Parks as well as quality built relief projects constructed by skilled craftsmen of the Works Progress Administration Crafts Movement in the United States influence is seen through its use of natural materials and craftsmanship in its Northeast Ohio is part of the Connecticut land grant known as the Western Reserve. Cleveland was founded by Moses Cleaveland in 1796. His surveyors laid out a New England style village. The Look About Lodge is a significant reminder of the legacy of the WPA. In 1933, the National Park Service was designated to supervise the development in state, county and Yellowstone in 1902-03. It described rustic style as: Successfully handled, [rustic] is a style which, through the use of native materials in proper scale, and through the avoidance of rigid straight lines, and over sophistication gives the feeling of having been executed by pioneer craftsmen with Look About Lodge's rustic style is evidenced by its chestnut log walls, sandstone columns and original slate roof, all local materials.(Photo 3) There are long, low porches on two sides.

At one time there were four WPA carved finials perched on the porch roof.(Photo 4) A carved plaque over the porch door reads "Built by the Works National Science Club, June 5, 1938." The Lodge's design is simple and horizontal. The interior has exposed chestnut walls and beams, varnished maple and pine floors and split log stair steps.(photo I) The heating ducts and grills are concealed in split log benches. The south fireplace has a carved quote from Chaucer: "The lyfe so long, the craft so long to lerne." and a six feet tall Thunderbird totem from Alaska." (Photo 2) The balcony beam to the north has a carved quote from New England naturalist John Buroughs: chestnut tables.

was born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 10, 1900. He graduated from the School of Architecture at Cornell University in 1925 and was registered to practice architecture in Ohio, Michigan and New York. He was also a member of the American Institute of Architects beginning in 1927 and for some years designed ranch houses in California during the 1950's. Nosek was most probably influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement. As a graduate of Cornell University, Nosek would have been aware of the Roycroft Arts and Crafts Community in East Aurora, New York. This center celebrated the spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The Arts and Crafts Movement, born in England during the Industrial Revolution, was a reaction to the machine made, mass produced products of the day.

William Morris, Phillip Webb, John Ruskin and others designed simple, handmade furniture, crafts, and structures that used of Red House, the home designed for William Morris by Phillip Webb in 1859. The Chaucer quote aptly reflected the Arts and Crafts movement's emphasis on craftsmanship and found its way to the United States. A leader of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Gustav Stickley, known for his American craftsman furniture began a journal called "The Craftsman," in 1901. He dedicated the first volume to William Movement and all of the principles that it represents. Working for the Cleveland Metroparks helped Nosek support his family during the Great Depression, but number of schools, churches and commercial buildings including tire stores for B. F. Goodrich Inc. in Akron, Ohio. He and Mr. Harris designed several houses for the annual Flower Shows held in the Cleveland Municipal Mr.

Nosek designed thirty-three creosote-stained chestnut buildings for the American Legion Children's Camp. It is now known as River Grove in North Chagrin Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks. Similar to Look About Lodge, the camp was built in 1938 by three entities, the Works Progress Administration providing the labor with land, engineering supplied by the Cleveland Metroparks, and materials and operating funds from the National Recreation Association's 1938 convention in Pittsburgh, PA. " In a letter from the National Park Service's field coordinator, Julian H. Salomon said, "Mr. Nosek is to be congratulated on these most interesting sketches. In Seven of the original thirty-three buildings remain standing. None of the remaining buildings closely compare to Look About Lodge. In addition, Mr.

Nosek designed a variety of cookhouses, four shelter houses and a Page County/State group functions. 22 his first love was designing homes.He designed houses for Ryan Builders after World War II.He also designed a horse stable for the Cleveland Metroparks.(Drawings 13-18)(list 2) Craftsman"in 1911.17,18Nosek's use of the Chaucer quote indicates his connection to the Arts and Crafts partnered with Alfred W. Harris. Mr. Nosek was a great admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright and also Clifford May who carved the quote into his fireplace at Craftsman Farms in New Jersey, constructedin 1908-10and published in "The many themes from nature. The Chaucer quote (The lyf so short, the craft so long to lerne) is carved in the fireplace Auditorium. His career spanned 50 years ending in the 1970's. The exterior logs or boards emphasize horizontality; they have low-pitched gable roofs and have rustic posts and brackets. Both Look About Lodge and Children's Camp's buildings have similar corner details. The Camp has bracket-like extensions of one use wood surface details for decoration. The Lodge had diamond cut outs in the balcony and basement stair stiles. decorative goose cut- outs. (Drawing 15).

While the drawings for Look About Lodge indicate hyphens, i.e. Look- About-Lodge, the Cleveland Natural Science Club never adopted the hyphens for use. Look About Lodge is the only climate-controlled structure open to the public in South Chagrin Reservation. It is available year round for meetings and nature programs and is the office for naturalists where reservation events are planned. The use of local construction materials anchors it in Northeast Ohio. The Trailside Museum in Brecksville Reservation of Cleveland Metroparks was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The Trailside Museum was also built by the WPA from 1937-1939. It is a rustic one-story chestnut Since the Lodge's completion in 1938, it has been in continuous use by the Cleveland Natural Science Club (CNSC) and later Cleveland Metroparks for recreation, social activities and nature education.

It helps fulfill the mission statements of both organizations; to protect wildlife and their environment, provide free nature education and recreation opportunities away from crowded urban areas. It was built by the Works Progress Administration architecture of the National Park System. There have been few changes to the Lodge over the years. Most involved utility and appliance upgrades and safety improvements. All have adhered as closely as possible to the original Blueprints and Drawings Archives located at Look About Lodge, 37374 Miles Road, Bentleyville, Ohio 44022.
