Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) An excellent example of the popular Greek Revival style, side-hall type oI house, the Newton House is a two and one-half storey frame structure with a pedimented facade gable. The facade is framed by corner pilasters and has a Doric porch. Along the lot's street frontage is a low granite wall and wooden picket fence.
The Newton House and its property are exceptionally well-maintained, offering a model of sympathetic maintenance for houses of thia period. The Newton House was first occupied in 1849 by S.D. Newton, & pafzter, who lived here until approximately 1854 when the property was occupied by Benjamin Lewis of Spurr & Lewis, victuallerg, and by James Lewis who worked in a local telegraph office. Although Sycamore Street and neigh- boring streets along Main Street south (Charlton Street and Ionic Avenue) were built up extensively in the late 1840s with houses like the Newton House, little remains of this former residential neighborhood. 10.
