Description of the property

CHECK ONE -ORIGINAL SITE _MOVED DATE The Day Building is located at 300-310 Main Street in downtown Worcester. It stands opposite Mechanics Hall (NR) and next to the Five Cents Savings Bank (potential It is one of the few turn of the century commercial buildings remaining on Main Street, an area which has been heavily altered during this century. It was built in three phases between 1897 and 1906. The original portion, facing Main Street, was erected in 1897-98. The second section,which extends behind and around the Five Cents Savings Bank to face on Walnut Street, was constructed phe folz wint ear the following year, while the third part, also fronting on Walnut Street, was The five bay facade was designed in a Romanesque Revival Style.

The first floor of this five story building consists of large plate glass and cast iron storefronts, while the upper stories are faced with buff brick and limestone trim. The facade is organized around a wide central bay with the words "DAY BUILDING" inscribed on the third story spandrel. Full two story pilasters link the third and fourth A deeply projecting modillion cornice over a wide frieze completes the design. Fenestration on the second floor consists of a single pane of glass in each bay flanked by canted 2/2 sash. Each bay is divided by narrow banded pilasters support- ing a continuous frieze. Fenestration on the third and fourth floors is similar, consisting of four sections of 2/2 sash in each bay arranged so that the outer two are canted. The fifth flooriis the most elaborately treated with paired 2/2 sash in the outer bays and tripled 2/2 sash in the center.

All the sash are topped by the glazed round headed arches which provide one of the dominant motifs of the Romanesque Revival design. The first Walnut Street addition is a simpler version of the Main Street facade. It utilizes the same brick and limestone trim above plate glass and cast iron store fronts,but it is only three bays wide and four stories tall. The second Walnut Street addition offers a contrast to the other two sections by employing red brick with granite trim rather than buff with limestone. However, this four and one-half story section relates to the others in scale and decorative motifs of round arched windows in the upper floor and deeply projecting cornice.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT The Day Building, one of the few remaining structures of its period and type in downtown Worcester, is significant for its architectural integrity and for the continuous role it has played in Worcester's commercial life during this century. The principal facade, facing Main Street, was designed according to plans by the local firm of Barker and Nourse. It is believed that the second section, facing Walnut Street, was designed by the same firm, although the building notice has not yet been located. The final section was designed by George T. Tribe of Worcester. Ihe building was originally constructed for John Day (1857-1907), a Connecticut native who first came to Worcester to study law in the office of George Frisbee Hoar. Day opened his own office in Worcester after graduating from Boston University Law School in 1876.

He first specialized in real estate law, gradually becoming more involved in real estate develópment. This building, which was one of the largest and most imposing in downtown Worcester at the time of Day's death, represents one of his majör achievetents: While Barker and. Nourse worked in Worcester throughout the late nineteenth century, only two other examples of their work remain in the downtown. are the Hamilton-Prentice Block at 621-625 Main Street, built in 1888 and the Merchant's and Farmers' Insurance Company Building at 242-246 Main Street, facade designed in 1901.
