Geographical Data Acreage of Property (Do not include previously listed resource acreage) (Place additional UTM references on a continuation sheet) Verbal Boundary Description (describe the boundaries of the property) The deletions from the current boundary of Vesuvius Furnace will consist of the access road area, the intersection area and the road and bridge area described above (see site map for visual description). Boundary Justification (explain why the boundaries were selected) The boundary changes reflect the intact area of furnace operations. The previous boundary incorporated the bridge built by the WPA in 1940, which does not correspond to the furnace architecturally or thematically.
In addition to the inconsistent contributions of the bridge to Vesuvius Furnace, a recent flood event has damaged the bridge and it is Deletion is recommended for the picnic area access road, as it has been significantly disturbed since the cessation of 11. Paul Loether Chief - National Register of Historic Places National Park Service 1201 I Street, NW (2280) Washington, DC 20005 Dear Mr. Loether: The U.S.
Forest Service (Forest Service) is seeking your review of and concurrence with a National Register Boundary Decrease nomination removing a 1940 (WPA Era) bridge listed as a contributing feature of the Vesuvius Furnace National Register property (NR# 89001714). The bridge and adjacent Vesuvius Furnace Recreation Area are located on the Wayne National Forest in Lawrence County, Ohio. The bridge was severely damaged during a flood event in July 2010 and has been determined a total loss by civil engineers and the Forest Service. The Wayne National Forest has consulted with the Ohio Historic Preservation Office (OHPO) regarding this proposed boundary decrease and both agencies agree the bridge has lost its historic integrity.
It is important to note that the 1940 bridge was not contemporaneous with the historic furnace and other industrial activities With the enclosed documentation, the Forest Service and OHPO support a new boundary delineation that removes the bridge from the Vesuvius Furnace listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). We are providing a new, jointly certified NRHP Registration Form and associated documentation for this request. If you have questions, please contact Troy Ferone, Deputy Federal Preservation Officer for the Forest Service, Eastern Region, at (414) 297-3461or tiferone@fs.fed.us. Thank you for your timely review and consideration. LO CHARLES L.
