Forest Service (Forest Service) is seeking your review of and concurrence with a National Register Boundary Decrease nomination removing a 1940 (WPA Era) bridge listed as a contributing feature of the Vesuvius Furnace National Register property (NR# 89001714). The bridge and adjacent Vesuvius Furnace Recreation Area are located on the Wayne National Forest in Lawrence County, Ohio. The bridge was severely damaged during a flood event in July 2010 and has been determined a total loss by civil engineers and the Forest Service. The Wayne National Forest has consulted with the Ohio Historic Preservation Office (OHPO) regarding this proposed boundary decrease and both agencies agree the bridge has lost its historic integrity.

It is important to note that the 1940 bridge was not contemporaneous with the historic furnace and other industrial activities With the enclosed documentation, the Forest Service and OHPO support a new boundary delineation that removes the bridge from the Vesuvius Furnace listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
