| July 2000 | Flood | Scottown | 1 killed | An eleven year old boy drowned in Indian Guyan Creek, swollen by the rains of the preceding evening. Rains of 2 to 3 inches were common in the vicinity, with Lesage measuring 3.1 inches, Willow Wood at 2.35 inches and Hogsett, West Virginia with 2.48 inches. The location was near the covered bridge at the junction of Routes 217 and 67. According to the Windsor Township Fire Chief, the boy waded through shallow water, only to step off the bank into much deeper water. After the water levels had receded, his body was found a few days later, about a mile downstream. |

Four people were riding all terrain vehicles, when a downpour had them seek shelter under a tree. One of the victims said, there was no thunder or lightning. The 2 females were transported by ambulance to Cabell Huntington Hospital, while the third person did not seek treatment. The woman that was knocked unconscious checked out of the hospital with no injuries. The other woman spent 3 days in the hospital undergoing tests. She was still having vision problems and pain in her hands and feet. |

More significant damage was noted here as several travel trailers were overturned, the roof was blown off of the Laidback Bar, and significant tree damage was noted in the adjacent camping area. Drone footage showed campers tossed in a counter-clockwise motion and some convergence in the tree damage. A salt storage dome was also destroyed in this area, causing significant injury to an employee.||The tornado continued to track eastward, damaging a few homes and damaging the roof and ballfields at Ironton Middle School. The tornado weakened but continued to cause some sporadic damage to homes all the way to the Storms Creek Flood Wall. |

The main concentration of damage was around Pedro, Ironton, Kitts Hill and Rock Camp. The state of Ohio reported 40 homes had major damage and 40 other homes had minor damage. Five businesses were also affected to some degree. Damage to roads, small bridges, and culverts occurred. Numerous water rescues occurred. |

Debris, including large boulders, also slid off unstable hillsides onto roads. ||A lot of the damage was concentrated in the Storms Creek. That was along and near Route 93. Yet, even along Solida Creek north of South Point, damaged occurred. Overall, Hamilton, Upper, Elizabeth, and Fayette Townships reported the most damage in the county. Some of this same area was flooded during May of 2010.||Thankfully, there were no fatalities in Lawrence County. One male residence along Route 93 woke up in a thunderstorm around 0100E. He was going to back his truck out of the garage and drive to check on another property. The electricity was out. Luckily, he got a flashlight and noticed his private driveway bridge was washed away before attempting to leave. |

He summarized the whole event by saying, we just had a bad evening. Two overnight shelters were opened and supported by faith-based organizations for 4 days. These were in Ironton and Chesapeake. The South Point Volunteer Fire Department also provided shelter accommodations.||The public infrastructure damage assessment was around $239,000. |

About 4 mobile homes were destroyed due to water damage, mostly along Pine Creek and County Route 27. About 10 dwelling had major damage. A few bridges and several culverts were damaged. Landslides also occurred. |

Route 93 was damaged. Several residents had private bridges damaged or washed away, leaving them stranded. About a dozen families asked the American Red Cross for assistance. |
