SIGNIFICANCE Oak Hill Cottage, built in 1847, became the show place and the center of Mansfield social life following its purchase in 1864 by president, Margaret Wilson, who sang here in joing recital with Frances McMillen, noted violinist, during the Fourth Liberty Loan Drive of World War I. It is believed that Shane's Castle was setting for the novel The Green Bay Tree, by Louis Bromfield, and of Mansfield and is, according to a leading authority on Gothic architecture, Ralph Adams Cram, "the one perfect Gothie house in the United States." The Gothic suburban cottage is discussed in the book, The American Cottage Bullder, pubiished in 1854 and examples and appeared in Ohio around 1830.
