DESCRIPTION (Check One) - Deteriorated CONDITION Excellent XX Good H Fair (Check One) - Ruins [X Altered - Unaltered DESCRIBETHE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (if known)PHYSICAL APPEARANCE X Moved - Unexposed (Check One) - Original Site The Loammi Baldwin Mansion dates from c.1750 according to the Historic American Buildings Survey. The mansion faces west on the Middlesex Canal, just off - Alfred Street. The land surrounding it is flat and undeveloped and a woods is located behind the house.' The Baldwin Mansion was moved 800 feet from its original location which faced east on the Middlesex Canal, near Elm Street. Behind it was an industrial complex and on its south side was a shopping center. The house was moved because it was threatened with demolition.
The present exterior and much of the interior appearance of the house indicates that much work was done on the building during the Federal period. The 3-story structure is covered with imitation ashlar siding and has a hip roof with monitor. The main facade, which faces west,. is five bays, wide; the sides are 3 bays deep. At each end of all four walls of the almost-square building are giant Tuscan pilasters on high pedestals- Simple block-shaped modillions, closely spaced, are set against the eaves. The entrance is centered on the main facade. Narrow and elongated Doric pilasters frame the entrance and support a pediment which is broken by an elliptical light. The elaborate detailing of che entrance, which contrasts with the bold simplicity of the rest of this house, suggests that the entrance is a later addition.
Above the entrance, on the second story, is a Palladian window, also added after the c.1750 date given us by HABS. The low 2-story ell, with stepped second story, was attached to the center of the rear elevation c. 1820. It has a low pitched roof whose eaves carry the same decoration as those on the main house. cdasca. losophy Science Sculpture Social/Human- itarian Theater Transportation Urban Planning Other (Specity) STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The Loammi Baldwin Mansion in Woburn was owned by the Baldwin family from 1661 ton1933.: Colonel Loammi Baldwin, an officer during the Revolutionary War, builder of the Middlesex Canal, and discoverer of the Baldwin apple, was born and died in the house.I His son; Loammi Baldwin Jr., considered the father of American civil engineering, also lived in the mansion. Col. Baldwin was the prime mover behind the Middlesex Canal, which was complet- ed in 1803. Built entirely under Baldwin's supervision, the Canal was one of the first links inaa system of inland waterways and the model for more ambitious projects such as the Erie Canal. Though Col. Baldwin had no formal training in engineering, he introduced in America the üse.
of hydraulic cement as well as the wye level and rod with magnetic needle. While surveying land in Wilmington,Mass., Col.Baldwin found an apple tree which produced fruit of exceptional flavor, and he took cuttings from it which he grafted into his own stocks at woburn. Cuttings of this new apple, which Col.Baldwin distributed, were widely cultivated and the species became known as the Baldwin apple. Loammi Jr. was one of three sons of Col.Baldwin who became prominent civil engineers. He graduated from Harvard in 1800 and established a practice in Cambridge; then, in 1807, he went to England where he made a survey of various public works. Upon his return, he set up a civil engineering office in Charlestown.
In 1814, Baldwin was placed in charge of the construction of Fort Strong, which was intended to protect Boston Harbor from British war- ships, and in 1819, he was appointed to complete the Boston Mill Dam. In 1825, the Bunker Hill Monument Commission was formed and Baldwin was named a member along with Daniel Webster, Gilbert Stuart, Washington Allston, and George Ticknor. Baldwin did all the surveys and planning for the Charlestown Monu- ment, which was completed in 1842. Both Col.Baldwin and his son were active in politics as well as engineering. Co1.Baldwin was appointed Sheriff of Middlesex County in 1780, the first under the new State Constitution. He represented Woburn in the General Court from 1778-1784 and in 1794 was a candidate for Congress. Loammi Jr. was a member of the Governor's Executive Council in 1835 and in the following year served as Presidential Elector.
Ço1.Baldwin became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1782 and a member of the AAAS Council from 1785-1796 and again from 1798-1807. The Baldwin Mansion is one of the best examples of Federal architecture in the locality. MAJOR BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES 1.
