14. Josiah, son of Josiali. 5, b. 1704, Aug. 5; m. 1729-30, Feb. 3, Elizabetli French, dau. of William, 7. She d. 1739, Nov. 27. He d. before 1743. Killed by the Indians says tradition. Ch. Josiah. b. 3730, Nov. 24. He was in the military service in 1747, on the C-onnecticut river, and narrowly escaped with his life by swimming the river from the anibusead(» in which French.

He was first taxed in 1748< He was a member of Capt. Parker's company on the morning of 19 April 1775, and was severely wounded by a bullet which struck his right arm, and so fractured the bone that he was not only disabled for a long time, but pieces of bone were extracted from it for several months afterward.

In 1814, he married Roxanna Warren, daughter of Moses Warren. She survived him, and afterward married Elisha Glidden. Colonel Hastings died, June 6, 1821, and at his solicitation, he was buried with military honors, at Townsend Centre. The Townsend Light Infantry, Captain Levi Warren, was in attendance as a guard of honor, and discharged "the last farewell shot'' at the portals of his sepulchre.

The subject of this sketch was born in Salem, Mass., May 7, 1820, in a house on the opposite corner to the one in which White was murdered by the Kuappa and Crowninshield. In 1821 his parents removed to Moultonborough, N. H., where they lived a few years, and William was sent to the village school for a brief term.

One man of the tenth regiment was wounded in the leg, and another in the hand. INIajor Pitcairn's horse was struck in two places.^ When Munroe and others fired from the hne, the British were so enveloped in smoke by the vollej they had just fired, as to make them invisible to the Americans. This is undoubtedly one cause wliy more of their 'shots did not take eifect.

IIuMPHREY Barrett came from Eng. and settled in Con. 1640. He d. 1662, and his wife d. 1663. They had 4 sons, one of whom, Thomas, was drowned in Con. River. Oliver Barrett, a grandson of the emigrant, m. Oct. 24, 1754, Anna Fiske, dau. of Ebenezer and Grace (Harrington) Fiske, of Lex. and settled in Chelmsford.

The command of the party of exempts is variously attributed to Pavid Lams on, a private soldier from Cambridge during the French War (see Paige, 405, note),* and to Phillips Payson, A.M., pastor of a church in Chelsea [H. U. 1754, D.D. &c.], both of whom were probably present. Bancroft says two wagons sent out to the troops with supplies were waylaid and captured by Payson, the minister of Chelsea.' Gordon, Hist.

Locke died in the service Sept. 22, 1862 (see p. 158 previous). Francis Gould received a ball in his knee Sept. 1, 1862, and died from its supposed effects Sept. 7, 1874 (see p. 253 previous). John B. Wiley was killed in battle. Gammon died of disease in the service. Greenlaw was killed in battle. John H. Hill died in prison at Richmond, Va., of wounds received at Fredericksburg, Dec.
