Description of the property

The Cooper-Frost-Austin House is a two=story, five-bay, center-entrance house with steeply pitched roof, rear lean-to, and an attached chaise house (now used as porch and garage) on theleft (southwest)side. Outstanding period features include the lean-to (which is integral with the framing of the house), the pilastered center chimney, and the overhanging right gable. The house was built in two stages -- the right half (which originally had a facade gable and casement windows) around 1690, the left half around 1720. The interior retains original fireplaces and exposed framing. The entry and stairs date from the early nineteenth century, but few subsequent changes have been made. The grounds, though reduced from their original extent, are still extensive for the built-up district in which the house now finds itself and are kept in an appropriately natural condition.

Statement of Significance (redraft) Long thought to be the oldest survivinghouse in Cambridge, the Cooper-Frost-Austin House is the only building in the city which retains seventeenth century architectural characteristics. Most notable of these are the large pilastered center chimney, the steeply pitched roof and the overhanging eastern gable.

The house, which still stands on its original site, was probably built in several stages; the eastern part of the structure was the first completed, then the western part and later the rear lean-to. /The Society for the Preser- vation of New England Antiquities, which has owned the house since 1912 and opens it to the public, dates the eastern part of the house from 1657 but other sources give the date as 1680. The western portion of the house was added c. 1720. The Cooper-Frost-Austin House was built on land owned by Deacon and Selectman John Cooper. Cooper's grandson Walter built the 1720 addition. The later Cooper, Frost and Austin owners of the house were descendants of John Cooper, in whose family the property remained until it was acquired by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. ,n An.

Page 1 Re-evaluation of construction date due to dendrochronology As a result of the dendrochronology testing of Phase I of the Cooper-Frost-Austin House in November of 2001, the construction date of the building has now been identified as 1681-82. The research team consisted of Daniel Miles and Michael Worthington of the Oxford Dendrochronology Laboratory, England, with Anne Grady of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA) acting as liaison. Their report, cited below, presented the following results and conclusions. Six samples were taken from the original eastern section of the building.

Four samples including the fireplace lintel, ceiling joist, axial beam, and purlin were all dated successfully although the cross-matching between samples was not exceptional, suggesting different sources for the wood. The result was two precise felling dates of winter 1680/81 and spring 1681, indicating that construction would probably have taken place during 1681 or possibly into 1682. One purlin was dated to the winter of 1675/76, suggesting that this timber was stockpiled. The fact that there was no cross-matching with the other samples from the site supports this interpretation. A note on dendrochronology dating In recent years tree-ring chronologies have been developed for eastern Massachusetts and adjacent regions, and a number of buildings or parts of buildings have been evaluated and given new construction dates due to tree-ring dating, or dendrochronology.

The principle behind tree- ring dating is a simple one: the seasonal variations in climate produce variations in growth which are reflected in the varying width of the annual rings of the tree. The rings in timbers from historical houses are compared with previously dated ring sequences from old-growth trees and from timber from structures with well-established dates to allow precise dates to be ascribed to each ring. Computer comparisons quantify how good the match is between the two. A dendrochronologist then analyzes the results and establishes the date the tree was felled. Some caution must be used in interpreting these dates to determine the construction date of a building. Sometimes timbers from the same construction phase of the same building have been felled one, two or more years apart.

However, it was common practice to build timber-framed structures with green or unseasoned timber, and it is likely that construction was completed within twelve or eighteen months from the felling date.
