Iwo rows, those on the east side of Center and on North Canal, are set back from the street, while the other three rows are flush with the sidewalk.

\ Each of the two-and-a-half story, brick rows contains 8 to 10 housing units, and, except for the Lyman Street row, pedimented dormers pierce the pitched roofs. Iwo chimneys straddle the end and alternating party walls, while recessed entrances, in pairs, are placed adjecent to the other party walls. On the gable ends pairs of windows appear on the walls on each Leurs on he gasa ma. story between the two chimneys. A simple entablature, consisting of a plain wide brick frieze and narrow cornice, runs the legnth of each main facade and turns on the gable end. Sandstone lintels cap the entranceways and windows.! A few alterations have been made to windows and entranceways, and a few chimneys have bean removed or altered in height. Dormers, post dating 1890 have been added to the block on the east side of Center Street and probably to the North Canal Street block.

The condition of the rows in the district is uneven. Some rows are in good condition (those on the east side of Center and on North Canal), while others are in serious need of restoration. The district is within the development plan of a neighborhood development program and neighborhood area of the model cities agency. Application will be made by the Holyoke Model Cities Community Development Corporation to HUD for a preservation grant for the exteriors of these properties.

Statement of significance

The Hadley Falls Company Housing District consists of five rows of workers' housing, \the work of the mill engineer John Chase and contractor Charles McClallan. Construction having begun in 1848 by the Hadley Falls Company, these blocks belong to what was the largest domestic grouping of its period and type in Massachusetts. In Holyoke, they represent not only the earliest of the few examples of housing built by a manufacturing firm specifically for its employees, but also the best tenement architecture of this and the next decade. The incorporation of the Hadley Falls Company in 1847 initiated the development of Holyoke as a major diversified industrial center in the northeastern United Statesa Founders of the Company, including Thomas H. Perkins, George W.

Lyman and Edmund Dwight, intended to duplicate the successful Lowell venture by erecting and maintaining a massive dam across the Connecticut River, developing a system of locks and power and navigational canals, raising and operating verious industrial establishments with their associated workers' housing, and selling the remaining water privileges.
