Description of the property

County Courthouse, and Wayne County Office Building. The buildings are all part of the older town center, and have common architectural ties, reserved for store fronts, but recently the original windows on this pilastered, and the windows are rectangular, double-hung sash type. The three story building has a slate mansard roof and a five-story tower. The first level is constructed of rusticated stone, and the entrances on the south and east sides are pedimented and flanked by classical but it received extensive exterior repairs in 1909. structure. Also interesting is the history behind them: to Ohio in 1855. He and his family settled in Wayne County, and Smithville, Ohio and opened a dry goods business that proved to feed business, having always been interested in agriculture. became his desire to sell out the dry goods business, move to 1865, he built this building to house his new offices, and to successful in the grain business, and he was able to purchase controlling interest in the Wayne County National Bank in Wooster. his time at the bank until his death November 17, 1901.

The first courthouse in Wooster was erected in 1819, but burned 1828 causing a loss of most county records. From 1831 to 1832 a new Wayne County Courthouse was built at a cost of $7200. But by 1877, the building was in such poor condition that the City of house, the county had to act quickly again to build a new building. cost about $75,000 to erect, and is on the site of the previous structures.
