The building rests on a dressed stone foundation.
The entrance has been modified by the addition of a gable-roofed, enclosed entrance porch of wood. To each side of this entry are two windows with twelve lights in the upper sash and sixteen lights in the lower. Similar windows are on the second floor, one each above those on the first. The bottom sash is fixed, and the top sash is hinged and opens inward. There are four identical windows on each end, two on each floor. All the windows have stone lintels and sills. The building's most interesting feature is the stone cornice which follows the eaves around the entire perimeter. The cornice consists of three separate courses, the upper one having the form of an ovolo molding. Wooden additions have been made to the south and east sides and a new chimney adjoins the west endwall.
The interior, which has been greatly modified throughout the years, has a simple center stairway and plain window trim which is original. It was built in 1843 by Daniel Sawyer, an early settler who came to Ohio in 1810 on foot from Onondoga County New York. Sawyer bought 160 acres and farmed the land with his sons who later occupied the farm and house. Wayside Gardens moved into the building in 1916.
The stone structure serves as the Catalogue store and administrative offices for the nursery, one of Ohio's oldest and finest garden centers. The building's all-stone construction, rare in Lake County, and its unusually large hinged windows are features which make it an outstanding and unique piece of architecture.
