The siding does not seem to be later, as might be supposed, but is hand-sawn.
The corner framing posts are visible in the interior rooms, and the squared walnut logs which form the wall structure are visible in the attic. The original house consisted of four rooms, two on each floor, and a central chimney. The two-story porch across the front is also original, as its roof rafters are continuous with those of the house. This pattern is from the tradition of the mid-Atlantic states rather than New England. A one-and-a-half story wing was added to the rear (south) side of the house later. On the east side of this wing, an open porch has been closed in. On the interior the central chimney has fireplaces in both the east and west rooms. The east fireplace has been altered to make the actual opening smaller. The rooms have panelled wainscoating which is very early and probably contemporary with the original house.
The left-turn stair to the second floor is behind the chimney stack, which is also different from typical New England practice. The south wing has a great open cooking hearth. It was closed at one time in its history and since re-opened, and its mantel is modern. The closed-in porch forms an extension of the main room, plus a small bath. (The palisade across the front porch in the photograph is temporary, while highway construction is being done directly in front of the house.) RECEIVED JUL 2 1974 NATIONAL REGISTER 8.

Conrad Neff (originally Naff, or arrived in the Canfield vicinity from Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 1802. It is documented that he erected a log house on this property, and presumably it was the existing house. The traditional date of the house is 1803, and of the addition 1812. Neff was a mason and spent most of his time building, while his sons cleared the land and farmed. Later his sons became wealthy as stock dealers, driving cattle over the Alleghenies. In 1826 the house was sold to Jacob Barnes (Barns), who operated a tavern in the house for many years, the house being on a main Pittsburgh to Cleveland road.
