Description of the property

- Ruins X Moved - Unexposed (Check One) - Original Site The 1809 Plymouth Antiguarian House faces east on a slight rise overlooking Plymouth Harbor, flanked and fronted by modern commercial development. The two-story main section of the house has a truncated hip roof/and forms an elongated octagon, running from north to south. It is Federal in style, as is the three-story ridge roof ell which extends from the northwest rear corner. A variety of fabrics cover the exterior walls. The facade's first story is covered with horizontal flush boarding. The second story and ell are clapboard but the south side of the main house and part of the ell are exposed brick. A delicate dentiled Ionic porch fronts the first floor of the facade and is topped by a small balustrade.

The octagonal entrance hall repeats the design of the main house and extends out under the porch so that the doorway.is flush with the porch columns. The main house has two end chimneys; the ell has two interior chimneys. The facade is 7 bays wide with 6/6 sash. The entrance door is flanked by two 4/4 windows and above it, on the second floor, is a 6/6 window flanked by two narrow 2/2 windows. The house is 7 bays deep, first floor windows being 6/6'and second and third floor windows being 8/12 and 8/8 respectively. The entrance door opens into an octagonal hall with stairway, which is flanked by an octagonal parlor and an octagonal keeping room. Over these two rooms, on the second floor, are two bedrooms, a sewing room, and a dressing room. The first floor of the ell contains a dining room, kitchen, summer kitchen and carriage shed. In 1830 the 3-story ell was enlarged with the aforementioned summer kitchen and carriage shed on the first floor and bedrooms on the two floors above. No structural, change has been-made since 1830 except for the introduction of gas in 1854 and running water in 1863. On the inside of the I formed by the house is a restoration "knot garden". The house was built in 1809 by William Hanmatt, a Plymouth merchant and ship owner who was very active in the social fife of Plymouth. He occupied the house with his wife and six children until 1820. When his business suffered heavily from the War of 1812, he sold the house but continued to live there until 1820. At that time, many Plymouth people were interested in developing land in Maine. Mr. Hammatt, with others of his family, bought land there. He moved to Bangor, where he became a leading citizen. Eventually he founded the town of Howland, named for his Pilgrim ancestor, where he built a house modeled on his house in Plymouth. In the prospectus of his new town, he urged young men to settle there, and "make themselves independent with no tool but the axe, and no in trade but honesty, industry, and sobriety".

In 1830 the Antiquarian House was bought.by Thomas Hedge, another Plymouth merchant, whose family occupied the house for nearly a hundred years. Thomas Hedge and. his brother, Isaac Eothrop Hedge, were partners. They. owned shares in many ships, some of which were fishing schooners and coasters which made voyages to the Mediterranean, England, France and Russia. The Hedges also owned shares in four whaling ships. The MAYFLOWER and the FORTUNE were named after the Pilgrim ships; the ARBELLA was named fox-the flag-ship of the fleet that brought Puritan settlers to Salem and Boston. The building of the whaler MAYFLOWER marked the recovery of Plymouth after the War of 1812. To process the oil from these whaling ships, the Hedges built a candle factory. The family also owned Hedge's Wharf, site of Plmouth Rock, which extended from the base of the rise on which the house was situated.

Thomas Hedge had nine children. Like the Hammatts, the Hedges were known for their hospitality. The house, in its exterior and interior, reflects the elegance, sophistication and prosperity of the heyday of Plymouth's maritime importance. The house remained in the Hedge family until 1920, when it was purchased by the Plymouth Antiquarian Society and moved adjacent to its original site to avoid demolition.
