Description of the property

- Moved Ruins - Unexposed (Check One) X Original Site The Framingham Railroad Station, a long one-story structure, was built in 1885 in an area agjoining the central business district of Framingham. Designed by H.H.Richardson, the building reveals several features characteristic of his work. The long axis of the building runs east-west, with the street entrance on the south and the platform on the north facade. A steep hip roof dominates the structure which is faced with rough-hewn random ashlar of grey and red granite. On the south facade the roof eaves are supported by brackets. On the north facade, the roof slopes down to form an arcade supported by wooden posts. This arcade continues out beyond the east and west ends for further platform shelter. Protruding through the slate roof on the north and south sides are three granite gothic dormers which function as a clerestory.

The central dormer, which is the largest, contains a wide arched window. The two flanking dormers house Palladian windows. There is one chimney of rough- faced random ashlar projecting through the central south dormer. Door and window openings are trimmed with rough-faced red stone. The wooden doors, some lighted, have wide horizontal recessed panels the full width of the door. The window pattern is arranged in single, double and triple groups of a three- light unit consisting of one rectangular window over an identical one, and both over a taller double-hung window, all the same width. The interior consists of a large central waiting room dominated on the south side by a central fireplace. Opposite from this is a ticket office which extends into the room and projects onto the platform with a round glazed bay.

Statement of significance

The Framingham Railroad Station is significant 1) as a thoroughly documented and well-preserved Richardson station designed at the height of his career, and 2) as a manifestation of Framingham's development as the transportation hub of the area. Framingham's development as a transportation center began in the early 18th c. Settlers came from Sudbury, travelling south to Framingham by river and the Old Connecticut Path. They travelled west on the Boston Post Road. This route was eventually superceded by a faster and more direct route west, further south at Framingham Centre. Worcester Road, running due west from Boston to Worcester, had Framingham Centre as the half-way post where horses and coaches were changed.

When it was decided in 1831 to build the railroad through the village of South Framingham, this then became the center of east-west transportation and the town of Framingham grew rapidly. This station soon became the point around which the central business district deve loped. Because of Framingham's central location, many branch lines were built. In 1846 the Saxonville Branch was established. In 1847 the branch to Milford was added along with the Centre Village Branch. In 1850 Marlboro and North- boro were reached.and this same line was extended to Fitchburg in 1865. In 1870 the Mansfield Branch was added and in 1871, the Lowell Branch. Thus, including the Main Line east and west, there were lines going in seven direc- tions from Framingham. There were also connections to two trolley lines- the "Boston & Worcester" and the "Boston & Middlesex".

These lines are still active, now using busses; a bus line to Milford uses the waiting room at the Station. There were two important areas of social activity in Framingham which drew people from the city and elsewhere to be transported by trains. In the 1860 period, special trains were run to Harmony Grove on the shore of Farm Pond (pictured in "Ballou's Pictorial" of June 1852). This was a 15 acre area used as a picnic grove for family gatherings, conventions and meetings, with famous speakers on abolition and temperance. Harmony Grove was the most frequently used picnic grove in Massachusetts for 25 years, with thousands in attendance from 1852 to 1875. Special trains were also run to "Lake View" at Montwaite, run by the Camp Meeting Association from 1880 to 1916.

This area covered about 85 acres, with its own railroad station, Western Union, post office and police and fire departments (non-extant)- There was a camp meeting attendance of 3500 on peak days. cont'd LEBOVILH 12-30-74

He had designed railroad stations before (Palmer and Auburndale) when he was in partner- ship with Gambril in New York City.

The North Easton, Chestnut Hill, Brighton, Wellesley Hills, and New Iondon Stations, as well as the Framingham Station, were designed by him at the height of his career, from his Brookline office, when he was without a partner. The Waban, Woodland, and Eliot Stations were left unfinished at his death in 1886 and were finished by Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge.
