Description of the property

The West Springfield Common Historic District is comprised of the West Springfield Common and the properties numbered 70 through 200 on Park Street. The Common is bounded on the north by Park Street and on the south by Park Avenue, on the east by Route 5 and on the west by Western Avenue. The properties that flank it on the north are (east to west): the Day House, an early 20th c. Tudor house, the First Congregational Church, the Park Street Cemetery, the William A.Cowing School, and the West Springfield Library. The Common had its beginning more than three hundred years ago. Records indicate that roads were planned in 1657, one of which was to lead from the "Hay Place" to the Agawam River. The "Hay Place", located on the east side of the Common, was used to store and transport hay across the Connecticut River to Springfield residents who owned farmland on the west side of the river.

Undoubtedly, construction of roads soon followed after the olans for them were recorded. For over 200 years, the whole area now occupied by, Park Street, Park Avenue, and the Common, was a single broad thoroughfare called Broadway. In 1866 Colonel Edward Parsons, who lived on the south side of the Common, was instrumental in laying out the green in a park-like manner. It is now divided into four green areas of miscellaneous sizes, stretching approximately 5 blocks. It is planted with a multitude of large shade trees, shrubs and flowers, and paved walkways run throughout.There are no structures on the Common, but there are five markers in different locations. The Josiah Day House, 1754, is a 2 story brick salt box. It is 2 bays wide and 1 bay deep with a 1 story ridge roof ell attached to the back.

Windows are 12/8 sash and almost all of them are engulfed in the ivy which covers the house. There is a dated brick (1754) set into the east exterior wall. The house is unaltered and in excellent condition. All of its six main rooms contain at least one full wall of paneling and sheathing. Next to the Day House is a stucco, Tudor influenced 20th c. house. Beyond is the First Congregational Church, built in 1872, and the third to house the First Congregational, Parish. Designed by the local firm of Perkins and Gardner, it is a spired brick Gothic style church with billets highlighting the spire and the arched first floor windows. The church originally con- tained an auditorium, a lecture room, a social parlor, and a kitchen. In 1957 a new wing was added which contains Sunday school rooms, church offices, a parlor, library, new kitchen, and a large hall.

The pews are black walnut with crimson upholstery. The facade retains its original rose oculus; other windows, once plain and leaded, were replaced with stained glass in 1948. The original spire, removed in 1947, was replaced with an exact replica in 1954. c.1787 The Park Street Cemetery has also been known as the Town House or Meeting- house furying Ground because of its location near the original Meetinghouse. It was the third burial ground to be established in the town, and contains remains of the Reverend Iathrop family and the Day family. DESCRIPTION The William A.Cowing School,c. 1915, is a brick Art Deco structure with granite trim, typical of school structures of the period. The facade is composed of three pavillions, the central one housing the arched granite entrance topped by a clock and flanked by two crenellated towers. A granite stringcourse runs along the roofline and is topped by one modified triangular pediment on the east and west elevations, and two of the same on the facade. The West Springfield Library, built simultaneously with the school, was paid for by Carnegie Foundation funds. The architect was Edward Tilton, a leading library architect of the time, who designed over 60 libraries in the northeast. Tilton apprenticed with Mokim, Meade amd White and his design reflects influences of the Boston Public Library. This 14 story structure is neo-Renaissance with an arcaded facade containing 7 bays.

A Tuscan pilaster flanks each of the arched windows and the doorway, and defines each corner of the main structure. Three square windows top each bay, running between the stringcourse and the cornice. The roof is red Spanish tile and a white cornice with antifixae encircles the building. The structure is composed of ochre brick with granite stringcourse and arched keystoned window caps. Statement of significance

The West Springfield Common Historic District is significant for 2 reasons: 1) the area has been the focal point in the historic develooment of the town, and 2) it provides an attractive and enjoyable open space in an otherwise dense commercial-residential area. The Common itself has served the town in many different capacities. During 1775 it was used as a training ground for the militia, and 53 men mustered there on April 20, 1775 to march to Boston, after word came of the Battle of Lexington. The Common also served as a drilling ground in 1787, when Iuke Day gathered his fellow townsmen to take part in Shay's Rebellion. In the first part of the 19th c., the Common hosted a bandstand, and summer evening concerts were a regular enjoyment for the townspeople. Now the Common is used primarily as a leisure area for town visitors and residents.

Its green lawns and shade trees provide a welcome refuge from the dense and heavily trafficed urban area that surrounds it. It is also the focal point of Christmas celebrations, a huge community Christmas tree being placed in its center every year. Also appearing regularly on the Common are thermometers or other suitable indications of the progress of various community charity drives. The Common and its markers and the properties flanking the Common on Park Street are all examples of significant eras in the town's development, from the 17th c. founding up to the early 20th c. The five markers ackowledge: the location of the first school, the location of the first meetinghouse, the passing of General Henry Knox and his army in 1775, the Hessian encamp- ment of 1777, and the W.w.II dead. On Park Street, the Day House, in particular, is noteworthy.

Not only is it said to be the only brick salt box existing in New England, but it is also unaltered and in excellent condition. The Day family occupied the house for 150 years and it contains a collection of furnishings from/ the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Together with the church, cemetery , school, library and Common, it provides an important and attractive educational and cultural resource for the entire town.

It is believed to be the only existing unaltered brick saltbox house in the country and is certainly the oldest brick building in the county.

The house is situated on a lot approximately one acre in size, and the south facade looks out over the common. Iwentieth century houses surround the Day House, but the area is pleasant, and the streets are tree lined. The main section of the house is brick, two stories high, shingled, with a ridge roof and a central clustered chimney. The facade is three bays wide with a central slightly recessed doorway. Four of the windows are 12/8 sash with plain trim and the fifth window, over the front door, is 9/6, also with plain trim. The side elevations, containing the integral saltbox roofline, are two bays wide, and each elevation contains five windows. The wooden ell, one story high, has a ridge roof with one chimney. Ihe ell has eight windows of various sizes and shapes, and three doors.

The ell is at least as long as the facade of the house, and extends back from the west half of the rear elevation of the brick structure. The interior of the house retains much of its original hardware, including many butterfly and "H" hinges, the original interior shutters, and some original fumiture. The house has five rooms, each with a fireplace. The first floor has two front chambers, and a large kitchen in the rear, with adjoining borning room and buttery. The kitchen and buttery walls have vertical linen fold sheathing from the late seventeenth century - The second floor has two bedchambers with storage areas under the saltbox roof; the east bedchamber contains a full fireplace wall with raised paneling typical of the eighteenth century, the west room holds a built-in architectonic cupboard with a glazed door. of the five rooms in the main house has at least one wall with decorative paneling or sheathing- The house is now used as a museum, with three of the rooms containing period furishings, and two being used to hold historical exhibits. The two and one half rooms in the ell are used as the caretaker's quarters.

The house retains most of its original interior, and is open to the public as a house museum. The Day House, built in 1754, is the oldest house in West Springfield, and the oldest brick house in Hampden County. Its unaltered condition, both on the exterior and the interior, as well as its original interior hardware and furiture, make it a significant example of mid-eighteenth century New England vernacular architecture. - Thomas Day, the builder's grandfather, was a member of the first group of settlers to receive land grants west of the Connecticut River. Josiah Day was a co-signer óf the first petition to the General Court of Massachusetts for the separation of West Springfield from its mother town in 1770. The Day family continued to be active in the development of the town, and occupied the house until the twentieth century.

Many of the furishings which the Days had acquired, representing styles from the seventeenth through the nineteenth century, remain in the house. As a house museum, with period rooms as well as historical exhibits, the building is a valuable educational resource for the school children in the town and for other interested people.

In our opinion the proposed district does not have sufficient historical or aesthetic cohesiveness to merit inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The boundaries exclude the properties facing the south side of the Conmon, which would be the logical edge of the district. Also, the properties on the north side do not extend the full length of the Conmon, making the district diffleult to define visually. We feel that it is the Common, and not the five unrelated buildings included in the distriet, that has been the focal point in the historie development of the tow.

We hope you will consider nominating the Comnon individually, as this appears to be an important landmark in the history and development of West Springfield. You might also consider nominating the Day House individually if you feel that this building meets National Register criteria.
