Description of the property

The Isaac Hall House, located at the corner of High Street and Bradlee Road, is a three story Federal house, (c. 1720, altered c. 1790) with a two story rear ell, and a modern one story addition fronting on Bradlee Road. All parts of the building were covered with gray aluminum siding in the 1960's with the exception of a small part of the first floor rear wall of the main house which retains its clapboards. The house rests on a foundation of stone and brick and has a low hip roof covered with slate and a central chimney with added flue to the rear. and a triangular pediment; beneath the entablature is a five light transom with bull's eye glass.

The front door is not original, the original one having been replaced in the nineteenth century- The irregular fenestration of the side and back walls, the presence of a visible timber frame in the front rooms of the house and some of the rear rooms suggest that in its earliest form the house may have resembled a three story central chimney"salt boxd , The entry, which is nearly identical to that of the Rev. David Osgood House (1785) at 141 High Street, the corner quoins which were elimated by the siding, the hip roof, and the interior detailing of the west front parlor indicated that the house was heavily altered in the 1780's or 1790's to bring it up to date with then current taste. Attached to the north wall of the main house is a two story rectangular plan ell set on a stone and brick foundation with a low pitched roof now covered in asphalt sheets.

A small chimney projects at the ridge of the roof at a point near the center of the plan. The scale and relationship of this wing to the house indicate that it may date from either the late eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries and may originally have served as a kitchen wing- Extending the entire length of the structure's east side is a modern one story addition set on a foundation of brick with a flat roof of tar and gravel. The windows of this wing duplicate in height, scale, trim and shutters, the windows The addition's cornice has a plain parapet bearing the name of the business. Facing the corner of High Street and Bradlee Road at a forty-five degree angle to the walls of the new wing is a double door, framed by two engaged Doric columns which support an entablature and triangular pediment.

Each door has six lights in the upper half, and the doorway is surmounted by a seven light transom. The plan of this addition is irregular with varying set- backs from Bradlee Road. The front half was constructed in 1960-61, the rear half during , the 1930's. The building is set back approximately five feet from the High Street sidewalk and is separated from the walk by a white wooden picket fence. Between the fence and the house is a stone bearing a plaque in commemoration of Paul Revere's stop at the house and Isaac Hall's activities in the Revolutionary War.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Located near Medford Square, the Isaac Hall House is the last surviving eighteenth century house visible from the square which had formed the core of the eighteenth century settlement of Medford. As such it presents the last example of the area's past development and scale. Constructed by Andrew Hall around the time of his marriage to Abigail Walker (c. 1720) this house was the first of five houses built next to each other by Andrew Hall and his sons: and is the only one still standing. (Of the five houses, the Andrew/Isaac Hall House, Ebenezer Hall House, and the Benjamin Hall Jr. House were recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey). Andrew Hall was born in 1698, the son of John Hall Jr. of Medford.

He became involved in real estate dealings as early as 1721 and eventually became the owner of much of the former estate of Major Jonathan Wade including the brick house built by Wade. In 1735 Andrew purchased the rum distillery of his brother (John Hall III) and later became involved with barrel making, and shipping on the Mystic River, and bought a slaughter house. At Andrew's death in 1750 his business interests came under the control of his son, Benjamin Hall. The house at 43 High Street was occupied by his widow until her death in 1785, and by his son Isaac Hall. Isaac continued to live in the house after his marriage in 1761 to Abigail Cutter and apparently took the responsibility for the care of his mother, for which he was reimbursed by her estate. In early 1775 Isaac was made a partner in the family business ventures.

The building's major historical association derives from the stop made there by Paul Revere on the night of his ride to Lexington on April 18-19, 1775, to alert Isaac Hall who was the captain of the Medford Minutemen. As a result, Hall led the company to Lexington where they participated in the battle along with the companies from other neighboring towns. Later in 1775 Hall resigned this post to organize a new company of soldiers which he took to Dorchester Heights in March of 1776. Of the members of the Hall family living in the immediate vicinity of the house, three of Isaac's brothers, two nephews, and several cousins were active in financial and political support of the Revolution rather than by participation in combat.

Although it had been thought that Isaac Hall died in 1789, it now appears that he merely sold his property in Medford to set up business in Boston as a distiller and to extend his family's business there. Records indicate that Hall died in his Boston home in 1805. The houses on High Street continued to be occupied by the Hall family well into the nineteenth century and the family retained much of their prominence until the end of the century. The Isaac Hall House was owned by the Lawrence family of Medford for a number of years on the nineteenth century. In 1913 the house was sold to the Gaffey family who have operated a funeral parlor since that year.
