Description of the property

The Medford Unitarian-Universalist Church and Parsonage comprises an ecclesiastical building and the Reverend David Osgood Parsonage. The church is a picturesque stone and wooden Gothic Revival structure, irregular in plan with gable-ended facade, corner bell tower and intersecting ridge-roofed wing. The Parsonage is a two-story late Georgian frame building with pedimented entranceways and well-crafted interior woodwork. Both buildings face south on High Street and are divided by Powderhouse Road. The Medford Unitarian-Universalist Church, built between 1893 and 1894, is late Gothic Revival reflecting the influence of English country church design. Situated on the west corner of High Street and Powderhouse Road, it was constructed on the rebuilt stone foundation of a previous church.

The main entrance is situated within an elaborate Gothic archway topped by a stained glass lancet light and located at the base of an imposing square crenellated tower at the building's southwest corner. Simpler secondary entranceways are situated at the southwest corner and on the east elevation, each under a wooden ridge-roofed porch. A porte-cochere, no longer in use, is still situated at the southwest corner of the church. The building material up to the eaves is Mason, New Hampshire granite ashler with Dorchester, Massachusetts pink stone quoins and trim and Amherst, Massachusetts gray-colored buff-stone window caps and sills. The north elevation is shingle covered. Colorful leaded stained glass windows in rectangular and lancet shapes surround the first story and are divided at the side elevations by stone buttresses.

A steep wooden intersecting ridge roof covered with slate surmounts the church walls. A large tripartite stained-glass lancet window dominates the facade's wooden shingled gable. A'-similar window is located on the east side of the rear wing's shingled gable. Two wooden lancet air vents are located on each side of the bell tower near its péak. The entire roof is covered in slate. The only noteworthy alterations to the church's exterior are the removal of the main tower's original gilt copper finial and the removal of the wooden tracery on the stair tower and turret on the east elevation. The Reverend David Osgood Parsonage, situated on the east corner of High Street and Powderhouse Road, is a ridge-roofed frame dwelling of the center entrance, two chimney type common within New Engländ.

Built in 1785 on a fieldstone and granite-faced foundation, this clapboarded house retains its dignified rectangular two-story form and its symmetrical window placement. The facade has a three bay, five window arrangement and the side elevations have two windows at each story with the exception of the west elevation's first story which contains a larger period window. The windows have 6/6 lights, exterior shutters and window trim. The pedimented central entrances of the main facade and east elevation are flanked by fluted pilasters which are surmounted by finely molded entablatures. A five light window is directly above the original twelve panel front door and a four light window is above the side door, now covered by a plain board door. Both doors still have original hardware. A1l the doors are six panel, retaining original hardware. The recessed window frames are flanked by their interior wooden shutters. The mantelpieces in the front rooms of the first floor are marble and were probably added in the mid-19th century. Other fireplaces exhibit - simpler but noteworthy period mantelpieces made of wood. The well preserved wainscotting, chair-rails and cornice moldings throughout the rooms are decoratively plain as is the central staircase with delicately turned balusters.

Statement of significance

BUILDER/ARCHITECT J. Merrill Brown, church The Medford Unitarian-Universalist Church and Parsonage are significant as an important part of Medford's architectural and religious heritage. The two buildings represent a very good example of late Gothic Revival design and a well preserved late Georgian house. The church itself is the fifth meetingChouse of the First Parish of Medford; and the Reverend David Osgood Parsonage is a tangible reminder of his prominent role in Medford and vicinity from 1774 until his death in 1822. The present church building was designed by J. Merrill Brown, a Boston architect noted in 1892's Boston of To-Day for his "many handsome and picturesques residences" in the city's suburbs. Brown's commissions are of special interest in light of his architectural training in the offices of Henry H. Richardson and Peabody and Stearns.

This church is Medford's most imaginative example of late Gothic Revival design characterized by an unusually picturesque silhouette and shingled gables. The fine quality of the masonry is attributable to the Dodge Brothers, prominent church builders in suburban Boston during the 1890's. / The Osgood Parsonage is a rare example of its period in Medford and therefore of great architectual value to the community. ? The frontispieces around the entrances are particularly noteworthy. The importance of the house in Massachusetts' architectural history is strengthened by the survival of the building's original cost sheet of 1785 which was published rw tesa sengeteaened in the Medford Historical Register, (volume 23, pp. 38-40).

References made herein include costs for the house's land, labor, frame, boards, shingles, clapboard, laths, brick, lime, "brads of all sorts," nails, painting, masonry, carpentry and so forth totaling approximately 600fexcluding painting and papering the rooms, completing a fence, building an outhouse and digging a well. The Parsonage was left to the church in 1874 by Osgood's daughter, Lucy, who resided there with her sister after her father's death. In 1713, shortly after the town voted to call Reverend Aaron Porter to their ministry, the parish established itself on a more permanent basis. Reverend Ebenezer Turrell, Medford's second minister, is particularly noteworthy for his sermons against the popular belief in witchoraft and in favor of inoculation for smallpox. In addition, he was the subject of a portrait by the famous Boston painter, John Smibert.

David Osgood began his Medford ministry in 1774 after graduating from Harvard and studying - at Cambridge University. Osgood was a Calvinist and noted for "preaching in boldness, vigor and authoritative dignity." He served the parish through the American Revolution, the stormy post-war years and the War of 1812. His sermons were often concerned with political matters and he was admired by Massachusetts Federalists whose principles he advocated. Osgood's eloquence was respected throughout neighboring parishes. His diary, now in the Archives of the Medford Public Library, is a valuable resource in studying his relationship with the community.

Osgood died on December 12, 1822 and Andrew Bigelow was elected his hortly alter bigelow began, ldeologlcal controversy led to a separation of the church which resulted in the formation of the Seconc Congregational Trinitarian Church and First Parish of Medford. The former group maintained the traditional orthodox doctrine while the latter group were supportive of William Ellery Channing's liberal Unitarian viewpoint. In 1824 the First Parish of Medford officially severed its connection with the town. Subsequent ministers were Caleb Stetson, John P. Morgan, Theodore Tebbetts, Edward C. Towne, Henry C. Delong, Lewis C. Detlefs and Robert D. Richardson.

Richardson, who retired in the 1950's, characterized the twentieth century Unitarian congregation in Medford as "a completely independent church which is dependent on the goodwill, the enthusiasm and the careful interest of the average person." Finally, the Unitrarian-Universalist Church came into being in April, 1961, as the result of the consolidation of three Medford churches: the First Parish; the First Universalist Society which was organized in March, 1831; and the Hillside Universalist Church which was organized in April, 1896.
