Description of the property

The Sharon Historic District contains six residences dating from the mid-eighteenth century to the ear_y twentieth century, two Greek Revival churches, and an early twentieth century libgary. These nine bulldings are located on a one block stretch of North Main Street in the Town Center. The buildings form a cohesive visual group, set back from the street with well landscaped lawns. To the south is Post Office Square, surrounded by altered and modern commercial buildings. Directly north is a modern Church and School, and farther north on Main Street are a nixture of a few nineteenth and many twentieth century houses, not related historically to the District. The Unitarian Church and the First Congregational Church are the visual focal points of the district. The Unitarian Church (1), a story white clapboard Greek Revival buiiding, was constructed in 1842.

The three bay facade has a pediment supported by four Greek Doric columns, with a plain entablature. Iwin Ilights of stairs lead up to the two outer bays of the porch, and between them a third flight descends to the partially sunken vestry under the church. In the portico a pair of paneled doors flank a large 20/20 central window, with shutters on the lower half. This fenestration and shutter pattern is repeated onthe side elevations, each side having three identical windows on the main story. The vestry windows onthe side elevations are directly beneath the main floor bays, and are 10/10 sash. A square bell tower rises in three tiers from the ridge roof, diminishing in size and terminating in a spire, and a clock face embellishes three sides of the base of the tower. The First Congregational Church (8), similar in style to the Unitarian Church, was built in 1839.

It has no entrance stair, but the four Ionic columns, resting on high oranite bases and topped by a pediment, are similar to those in the church across the street. A square bell tower rises above the pediment in three tiers, diminishing in size and terminating in a spire. Ihe lacade behind the columns 1s three bays wide. A central pair of double doors is topped by a 9/9 sash window which is flanked by two other 9/9 windows, which are in turn topped by three 6/6 sash windows. The five bay north and south elevations each contain three tall center-mullioned windows at the sanctuary level with 8/8 sash and a 2/2 transom. The four windows at the meeting room level have 8/8 sash. This meeting room level was created when the church was raised in the nineteenth century, to afford more space.

Bays of irregular size and sash are located near the southeast corner in the twentieth century ell addition located in the rear of the church and extending from the southern elevation to the north. This ell was raised in 1959 to construct classroom space beneath it, and matches the original church in materials and style. The Sharon Public Library(9), across North Main Street from the Unitarian Church, and next to the Congregational Church, is a 1 story brick Georgian Revival building constructed in 1914., Semicircular steps Lead up to the central entranceway which is topped by an elaborate broken segmental pediment, supported by Corinthian columns. The entrance is flanked on either side by two tall arched windows. These are topped with concrete keystones and have a sash consisting of a ten-sectioned fanlight over two twelve light windows separated by a wooden center-mullion.

The roof is flat with a projecting dentiled wood cornice just below the top of the parapet. structure's foundation is brick faced. An addition, similar in size and character, was added to the rear in 1960. The Morse House(2), built c. 1805, is located just to the north of the Unitarian Church. Built of brick reputed to have been brought from England as ballast, the 22 story house is five bays wide and four bays deep, with a ridge roof and two chimneys at each end.

The central entrance porch, a later addition, is hip roofed with two slender Tuscan columns. Brackets added to the cornice in the mid-nineteenth century and a screen-enclosed porch twentieth century- The First Congregational Church Parsonage(3), built c. 1905, is a 2% story white clapboard Colonial Revival building, five bays wide and two deep. It has a hip roof with a large center gable facing the street, and a hipped dormer in the center of the north and south roof elevations. The flat roofed entrance portico is supported by two Tuscan columns and is reached by a short flight of stairs. Directly above the porch is a shallow bay with a window which lights the stairwell. Above this is an elliptical fan window, in the middle of the center gable. A semi-octagonal bay projects from the rear of the south elevation. Next to the Parsonage is Dr.

Griffin's Office (4), an 1898 Colonial Revival building similar to the Parsonage in massing, height and materials. This 22 story white clapboard structure has a steeply pitched hip roof, two gabled dormers on the facade and one on the north and south elevations. The house is three bays wide and two bays deep, and most of the windows have shutters and are grouped in two's and three's. A balustraded stairway leads up to a square flat-roofed porch topped by a balustrade and supported by four Tuscan columns. Flanking the portico are two projecting three window bays; above the portico is an arched doorway, with an arched window on either side, leading out onto the balcony above the portico. A columned and balustraded porch extends across the south elevation. The Dennett House, built c. 1753, is the oldest extant building in the district.

It is a 2 story ridge roof, central chimney, Colonial house, four bays wide and three bays deep. The fenestration is irregular, and most of the windows have 9/6 sash and shutters. Iwo ells, similar in materials and style to the original house, have been added. Across the street from these four residences are two other residential structures, included in the district because they visually complete the streetscape. The house next to the First Congregational Church, 41 Main Street(7), is a small, gable end to the street, 2 story with attic, clapboard building.

Architectural details include a returned gable, two bay windows with dentil trim, (one on the facade, the other on the south elevation and a pedimented portico supported by slender square On the corner of North Main Street and Highland Avenue,47 Main Street (6), is a 2% story residence, with a ridge roof and jerkin head gable facing the street. There is a bay window on the south west corner of the house, one on the south elevation, and a shed roof porch on the north west corner of the house. The exterior of the house has been covered with shingles.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Located on North Main Street in the midst of modern commercial and residential. development, the Sharon Historic District contains the only contiguous, cohesive group of buildings representing the historic development of Sharon, Architecturally, the nine buildings, some which replace earlier structures, display a variety. of eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth century styles. The buildings directly north of the district are modern, and do not relate to the district. To the south is Post Office Square, commercially developed, with a few altered late nineteenth century buildings, and many modern intrusions. The Square is not included in the district because it has lost, through modern development, whatever sense of time and plkace it once had.

Sharon was originally part of a 1637 "New Grant" given by the Dorchester Proprietors to encourage new settlement. In 1726 the present towns of Sharon, Canton and Stoughton, were separated from Dorchester and called the Stoughton Territory. Settlers in the southern part of the Stoughton Territory (now Sharon), finding it difficult to attend public worship in the northern part of the territory, petitioned the General Court in 1739 to be set off as a separate precinct. request was granted and. in 1740 the Second Precinct of Stoughton was established. It was incorporated in 1765 as the independent town of Stoughtonham, and in 1783 changed its name to Sharon. The Second Precinct was first developed where the Sharon Historic District stands today, half way between the two major thoroughfares in Sharon, the Bay Road on the eastern edge of town and the O1d Post Road on the western edge.

The Unitarian Church(-) stands on the site of the first Parish Church of the Second Precinct, built c. 1740. The original meetinghouse was razed c. 1785 and a new one built in 1787. In 1821 a group of Calvinists, called the "Christian Society" broke away After the theological split support, so they demolished it and built the present Unitarian Church in 1842. The Dennett House(5), the oldest extant building in the area, was built in 1753 as the parsonage of the First Parish Church (Unitarian) on the site of an earlier parsonage which had been destroyed by fire. Thenew parsonage was occupied by Rev. pnilip curtis, the minister of the first Parish Church, from the time it was built intil his death in 1797.

After several other owners, it was deeded in 1832 by Widow Nancy Gould to the "Christian Society" (Congregationalsits) along with the land on which the Congregational Church Church Parsonage and Dr. Griffin's Office now stand.

It was certainly the first brick house in Sharon, and the brick is different in color and texture from any other local brick.

Later in the nineteenth century the house was owned for a time by the Hixon family, original settlers of the Second Precinct. The house once had been painted but the brick has been restored to its original condition by the present owners. The First Congregational Church Parsonage (3) and the Dr. Griffin Office (4) both stand on land given to the Congregational Church in 1832 by Nancy Gould. The Office was built in 1898 as a private residence, while the Parsonage, built in 1905, has always been used as such. The two houses on the east side ofNorth Main Streetwere built in 1910 and 1911. They are the first buildings on their sites, and were part of the beginning of the intense development of the Old Second Precinct center. They are related visually to the rest of the block.

The Sharon Public Library (9), south of the Congregational Church, was built in 1914 with funds given by Andrew Carnegie. This Georgian Revival brick building, designed by C. Howard Walker, had its photograph published in the Encyclopedia Britanica (14th Ed., 1929) article on Library Architecture, as an example of outstanding library architecture.
