Description of the property

The Salisbury Mansion and The Salisbury Store are situated on a high point in downtown Worcester, on a block bounded by Highland Street on the south, Harvard Street on the east, Institute Road on the north, and Lancaster Street on the west. The Mansion is located on the north west corner of the block and faces south. The Store faces the Mansion, and a large parking lot in front of the buildings extends to Highland Street. The Mansion and the store were moved in 1929 from their original location in Lincoln Square to their present location, to prevent their destruction. The Salisbury Mansion was built for Stephen Salisbury I by Deacon Joseph Allen of Hardwick, from designs submitted by Abraham Savage, a Boston architect. The house as it was originally constructed in Lincoln Square was used both as a residence for the Salisbury family and as a store containing hardware and other goods.

The house was the same size as it is now, according to the large collection of Salisbury papers preserved at the American Antiquarian Society. These papers include the original building contract, and a complete account of the building materials used in the construction of the Mansion. The store originally occupied the entire east part of the lower floor; a "Pentast" or "paintast" (pent roof porch) over the east and part of the south side of the exterior set the store apart visually from the residential portion of the house. Various interior and exterior alterations were made until 1819 when, with the addition of the delicate Classical Revival portico, the house took on the appearance it has today. The Mansion is 2 stories high, with a hip roof and clapboards, and has irregular window spacing on the facade.

A pedimented center gable with modillions and an oculus emphasizes the 1 story portico underneath it. The portico is supported by five slender Corinthian colums and is topped by a balustrade. The windows are all 6/6, and each one is topped by a cornice with modillions. Wooden quoins delineate the corners of the house and modillions support the cornice. n Aor, epr an hno opmieal. can There are four irregu- larly placed chimeys and the main door, with an elliptical fan light and long narrow side lights flanked by slender pilasters, is off center under the portico. The interior of the Mansion contains most of its original 18th century woodwork. The wainscoting and window trim are characteristic of the third quarter of the eighteenth century.

The interior pilasters, paneling, door frames and cornices, with their elegant but restrained regularity, also seem to date from the original construction of the house. The two east drawing rooms, decorated when the store was finally removed in 1819, have woodwork characteristic of this period, with a few details probably added in the 1830's. The Mansion is now owned by the Salisbury Associates and is rented to the Girl Scouts. The Store was constructed next to the Salisbury Mansion in 1790, for use as a storeroom. After the Store was moved it was restored to its original condition based on elevation drawings found in the Salisbury Papers, an extensive collection consisting of original contracts, inventories, letters and plans, and preserved by the Worcester Heritage Society.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT arhitet- abaham havase Mansion by Deacon Joseph Allen 1772, 1790 STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The Salisbury Mansion and Store are significant to the City of Worcester because of their long association with the Salisbury family, who were prominent in Worcester's commercial activity and important contributors to Worcester's cultural heritage. The buidings also have great architectural significance. Mansion is one of the oldest, and certainly the grandest extant house from its period, and the Store is an excellent example of provincial classical architecture. The Mansion was built in 1772 by Stephen Salisbury I. Stephen I moved to Worcester in 1767 at the age of twenty-one to establish a hardware store, in partnership with his brother Samuel, of Boston. The store was first located in a small rentea butlding but when the Mansion was erected the store occupied part of the first floor.

In 1790 the building now called the Salisbury Store was built on the property, and served as a warehouse. The actual shop remained in the Mansion until 1818, when Samuel Salisbury's death brought an end to the partnership. That year the shop was moved into the Store and the space it vacated in the Mansion was turned into two parlors. Stephen Salisbury I married Elizabeth Tuckerman of Boston in 1797, and after his death in 1829 his wife continued to live in the house until her death in 1851. The Mansion had numerous tenants after Elizabeth's death, but remained in the Salisbury's possession until 1905. Stephen Salisbury III, Elizabeth's grandson, died that year without an heir, and in keeping with his philanthropic ideals, left the Mansion and the Store to the American Antiquarian Society.

The Society in turn sold the buildings in 1908 to the Worcester Art Museum, which Stephen III had founded. The Museum had planned to house their collection in the Mansion and adjoining store, but this plan never materialized. In 1929 the Museum had to move the Mansion and Store from their original location to their present site, in order to prevent the destruction of the buildings by the city. attached to the deed. The Employment Society had to move out in the late 50's was bought by the Salisbury Associates and restored. It is now leased to the Worcester Girl Scout Council. The Store was bought by the Bay State Society for the Crippled and Handicapped, also with preservation restrictions, and is now used for their offices.

In the center of the roof, a small square enclosed structure houses the original hoist, and the interior loft 'remains intact. There are four 9/6 windows with plain trim on the first floor of the facade and a modern shed porch.

12/12 windows on either side of a central Palladian window and each end elevation contains an oculus on the second floor. Thin boarding laid on top of the clap- boards divide the Store into arched bays, three on the facade and one on each of the elevations. The building is now owned by the Bay State Society for the Crippled and Handicapped and houses their offices. #8. The special architectural significance of the Mansion and the Store derives from the fact that they are delightful examples of provincial architecture emulating the elegant structures of the coastal towns, as interpreted by local craftsmen with little formal training. Of additional significance is the voluminous manuscript collection of the Salisbury Family Papers, preserved at the American Antiquarian Society.

This collection includes most of the details of the buildings' construction as well as detailed inventories and thousands of family letters. The Mansion, and the store, along with the Family Papers and the Salisbury portraits, silver, and furniture which are preserved in the Worcester Art Museum, give as complete a record of family history as can be found anywhere in New England. .
