CODE: RECEIVED APR 29 1975 NATIONAL REGISTER This is a medium-sized brick house in the Greek Revival style. The main two-story block of the house is nearly a cube. From it one-story wings project to the south and west. The east and north elevations each have three bays. The entrance is in the southernmost bay of the east facade.
It has a robustly three-dimensional doorway, the door being set between square piers whose entablature is stepped back over the door. Above this there is a transom. The entrance and window openings are spanned by sandstone lintels. The frieze below the eaves is a plain board with a dentiled cornice. The roof is hipped. A flat balustrade above the eaves was removed around 1900 when the roof was re-shingled. There are porches on the east side of the south wing and on both sides of the west wing. The porches have two and three columns on the south and west respectively, plus a half-round engaged column against the house. These simple fluted Doric columns appear to have been cut off and their bases replaced with square pedestals in the second half of the nineteenth century. The porch cornices are also dentiled. The roof of the south wing is hipped like the main gable roof.
Attached to the southwest corner of the west wing is a utility wing, of which only the four walls remain; the roof is completely gone. It also has stepped parapets. Some original fireplace chimneys have been removed, and an exterior chimney has been added on the north wall. The interior has simple Greek Revival woodwork detail, and the stairway has mahogany spindles, post and rail. However, the building has been standing vacant since 1964. It had not had proper maintenance for some years before that. The roof and some of the floors are in bad repair, and parts of the house have been vandalized. The house has been the subject of community concern for some years, but the necessary financial support has not been forthcoming. 8.

Its builder was the most prominent citizen in the town of Strongsville. Alanson Pomeroy was born in 1805 in Northampton, Massachusetts. In 1822 his parents moved to Strongsville. The township had been settled in 1816 by John S.
Strong and a handful of other settlers. In 1818 the township was organized, and Strong brought his family to Ohio. He built the first framed residence and tavern in Strongsville in 1820. After the Pomeroy's arrival, Alanson helped to clear his father's land and make the farm a comfortable home. The elder Pomeroy died in 1835, and Alanson continued to farm and also engaged in the mercantile business at Strongsville Center. He built his house in 1848, which because of its proportion and detail is one of the finest Greek Revival dwellings in the region. Basically, Strongsville was a quiet country township of prosperous farmers. Pomeroy was extremely active and beloved in this community. Next to his house on the south stood his store and post office, now gone. South of the store he donated land for the Congregational Church building.
He was a justice of the peace and one of the incorporators of the First National Bank of Berea. He made substantial donations to Western Reserve College, Baldwin University, Berea College, Kentucky, and Oberlin. The county history of 1879 states that: "Beginning with nothing but his own industry, skill and integrity, by dint of perseverance and good management he gradually acquired a considerable property." Pomeroy retired from business in 1870 and died in 1877 at the age of 72. The property is still owned by the Pomeroy family but is not occupied and is for sale. 9.
