Description of the property

The Wing Fort House is situated on a narrow country lane near the Cape Cod Bay in Sandwich. The surrounding land is open and fairly flat, with marshes behind the house leading out to the dunes on the beach. The setting around the house has prob- ably not changed very much since the house was built; because of the marshes there has not been any modern development within sight of the building. The house itself is two stories high, four bays wide, and has a center chimey. The exterior walls and the roof are shingled, and the windows all have 12/12 sash. The main door is located in the second bay from the left and another door leads into the main part of the house from a low one story shed off the west gable end. The building was originally a one and a half story, one over one room so-called "fort", built shortly before 1641.

The size of the original structure was more than doubled with the addition of another one over one house, moved to the site and joined to the original building. According to Abbott Lowel1 Cummings, this most likely occurred in the mid-eighteenth century, although the moved building was probably constructed c. 1700. When the houses were joined, each lost its original chimney and a new one, of irregular shape to accommodate the di fferent dimensions of the two solve the problem of the different depths of the buildings, and a new roof was con- structed over both the houses. The new paneling in the Old Fort Room, instead of replacing the seventeenth century vertical paneling, was built out a few inches over the older wall surface.

One of the panels in the dado of the new wall has been hinged so that when it is opened one can look inside the space between the two wall surfaces, and see the heavy exposed girts and posts, complete with cham- tered edges and whitewash. It can also be seen that the vertical joints of the seventeenth century sheathing have been joined with a bold spline molding, a rare decorative feature. The 1700 house, in addition to its mid-eighteenth century alterations, contains some exposed carved and chamfered corner posts, girts, and summer beams attesting to its early construction date. In the attic further evidence of the eighteenth century alteration is clear. The rafters of the original story and a half "fort" are vis- ible at one gable end, and the lean-to pitch of the 1700 house can be seen at the other end. The house today 1ooks very much as it did just before the Revolutionary War.

There were no further major alterations after the houses were joined, although the house has been very well maintained. Modern conveniences including heating, plumbing and electricity were added to the building in this century without detracting from the atmosphere of the house. The building is now used as a museum and as a meeting place for the Wing Family of America, Inc.

Statement of significance

/ARCHITECT The Wing Fort House, which incorporates one of the oldest structures extant in New England, is a significant architectural and historic landmark on Cape Cod. The house gains additional significance from the fact that it has been owned by the same family since 1641, and as such presents an accurate record of how succeeding generations of a New England family lived. The first members of the Wing family to come to the new world were Deborah Wing and her four sons, who came to Boston in 1632. Deborah's husband, the Reverend John Wing, Em 12 to had been a prominent clergyman in London but had fled to Germany and then to Holland when he disagreed with the teachings of the Church of England. After he died his 80n don widow and four sons moved to Boston to seek what they thought would be an atmosphere of religious freedom, and settled in Saugus.

In 1637 Deborah and her sons John, David and Stephen moved to Sandwich with the "ten men of Saugus" who had received a grant from the Crown to the section of Cape Cod which lay south of the Plymouth Colony. Stephen, carrying on his father's dissenting beliefs, became a founding member of the first Friends Meeting in America which was established in Spring Hill in 1658. He suffered great persecution at. the hands of the Plymouth, government because of his beliefs, but was nevertheless a respected citizen of Sandwich. Stephen was the Wing who, in 1641, bought the original one room fort which is still incorporated in the present house. The house has remained in the possession of the Wing family since that date. The furnishings and interior wall coverings have re- flected the different periods the house has been lived in but the building still re- tains its eighteenth century aspect.

The house was acquired by the Wing Family of America Inc. in 1942 from the members of the family who had been living there. The Wing Family Inc. was incorporated in 1902 as a non-profit association for the purpose of collecting and publishing the family history, holding family reunions and creating a Family Memorial Hall for historical and literary archives. The Wing Fort House is now open to the public as a museum.

1024-0018 76000227 Wing Fort House Sandwich (Barnstable), MA Page1 Re-evaluation of construction date due to dendrochronology The results of dendrochronology testing of the Wing Fort House (aka Wing House) were inconclusive. A total of 21 samples were taken by Michael Burrey from eighteen timbers on August 30 and 31, 2007. All timbers sampled were oak and appeared to be primary first-use timbers or timbers that might have been re-used from an early phase of construction. Sampling locations included sills, girts, posts, principal rafters, joists, purlins, and posts. None of the samples correlated with existing reference chronologies, and there are no reference chronologies from southeastern Massachusetts. The lack of dating was also due to the nature of the samples, many of which had multiple narrow rings and some had too few rings.

In the future, when reference chronology data is available for southeasten Massachusetts, precise dating of the samples from the Wing House timbers may be possible. A note on dendrochronology dating In recent years tree-ring chronologies have been developed for eastern Massachusetts and adjacent regions, and a number of buildings or parts of buildings have been evaluated and given new construction dates due to tree-ring dating, or dendrochronology.

The principle behind tree- ring dating is a simple one: the seasonal variations in climate produce variations in growth which are reflected in the varying width of the annual rings of the tree. The rings in timbers from historical houses are compared with previously dated ring sequences from old-growth trees and from timber from structures with well-established dates to allow precise dates to be ascribed to each ring. Computer comparisons quantify how good the match is between the two. A dendrochronologist then analyzes the results and establishes the date the tree was felled. Some caution must be used in interpreting these dates to determine the construction date of a building. Sometimes timbers from the same construction phase of the same building have been felled one, two or more years apart.

However, it was common practice to build timber-framed structures with green or unseasoned timber, and it is likely that construction was completed within twelve or eighteen months from the felling date.
