Description of the property

The Samuel Train House in Weston is situated on slightly less than one acre of well land scaped property, in a heavily wooded residential area. It is sited close to the road at the intersection of two streets. The house is in excellent condition. The original rectangular farm house is a central chimney, ridge-roofed,two-story clapboard house painted white. It sits on a fieldstone foundation, and faces north, with an asymmetrical facade four bays wide. The fine pedimented front doorway is asymmetrically set in the second bay of the western end of the facade. There is a simple cornice, wide corner boards, and a large protruding house sill. Half the windows are the originals, with six over nine fenestration. The other windows are plain double hung. All the windows have heavy mullions, bold pegged window frames with moldings at the heads, and louvered shutters.

These heavy details reveal the houses early period oon- struction. The east elevation is two bays deep, has a large bay window and open returns; the west elevation has an entryway with a simple pediment set next to the window of the rear bay. An addition to the west side is two bays wide and has diamond paned casement windows, and eyebrow windows below the cornice. The original section has been only partially altered, and the additions enhance the form and appearance of the whole. A wing on the east side and an ell on the west rear were added about 1875 and a link connecting the two added in 1965. The house has a swimming pool, a two car garage, and a workshop. The interior retains the earliest type floor plan of a full two story central chimney house, with three main rooms to a floor, each with a fireplace.

The front rooms are of different sizes, reflecting the plans of the "one over one" or "two over two" central chimney homes that preceded those with a lean-to. The two northwestern rooms and the former kitchen have wide panelled fireplace walls. The parlor has a stenciled wall, and a primitive treatment of the moldings around the fireplace. There is a smoke chamber and a bee-hive oven built into the central chimney. This chimney is unusual in that its' location eliminates and replaces the standard winding stair usually on center with the front entrance in the entrance hall. A new staircase to the second floor in the southwest corner replaces the back stair, formerly located between the buttery and the kitchen, which is typical to the plan of houses of this period. The rear staircase to the attic is in the original location.

The interior retains a pegged oak frame, bevelled over-sized aclom. The intord ridge pole, widely spaced heavy rafters, four braces between the last rafters and the peak, and the original ladder to the roof. There is a cellar located under only half the house 8

Statement of significance

BUILDER/ARCHITECT John Train The Samuel Train House is significant as an excellent example of one stage in the develop- ment of early houses in New England. It is representative of the first of the central chimney, ridge-roofed full two story plans that developed from the lean-to or "salt-box" type. This house retains the "salt-box" plan, but with a full second story rather than the half story under a lean-to. The house is also significant because for 106 years it was owned by three successive Samuel Trains, all of whom held town offices, served in the military, and took an active part in the town's schools. John Train arrived in Watertown from England in 1635. Possibly as early as 1662 he or his son, John, purchesed a farm in the extreme southwest corner of town in Watertown Farms, which later became Weston.

In 1735, Samuel Train purchased from his father, the third John Train (1682-1742), sixty acres of farmland, and in 1738 he built his house. Samue1 Train I (1711-1806) was town selectman from 1763-1765, and served in the military as an Alarm Man of the Train Band listed in 1757. Samue1 II (1745-1838) was also a selectman from 1796 through 1799, and was a lieutenant in the Militia. He fought at Iexington in 1775. He played an important part in the establishment of the Baptist Society in Weston (now the First Baptist Church of Weston) and in obtaining religious liberty for the Society. He and his son, Samuel III, were incorporators of the Baptist Society, for which Samuel II and three others built the Meeting House. Samuel II became Deacon of the Society in 1820, a position he held for the rest of his life.

Samue1 III (1785-1845) was a lieutenant colonel in the Militia during the War of 1812, and his brother, Charles, born in Weston in 1782, graduated from Harvard College with distinction and in 1811 became the first settled minister of the Baptist Society of Weston and Framingham. He also served in the State Legislature in both the House and the Senate, and was noted for his championship of religious liberty and social improvement. Thomas and Anthony Irving managed a dairy farm on the property (c. 1875-1926). The east wing of the Train House was their milk house.
